Ghana advanced in dramatic fashion, beating Argentina 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Round of 16. Jessica Appiah gave Ghana an early lead from Cynthia Obinsrewuo’s assist, before Mercedes Diz equalised late after Hajara Adam had been sent off for a second booking with 13 minutes to go. The Black Maidens held their nerves in the shootout, converting all five penalties with Appiah scoring the winner to claim the Player of the Match award.
Japan, two-time champions of the competition, remain one of the most technically gifted sides in the tournament, known for their quick passing, disciplined defending and high-pressing game.
Head Coach Joe Nana Adarkwah, who lost his voice celebrating the win over Argentina, will be proud of his side’s resilience and tactical discipline. The Black Maidens controlled the game against Argentina until the red card and showed great character with 10 players.
Ghana will need the same defensive solidity from Belinda Marku Aklie in goal and the backline, plus the creativity of Cynthia Obinsrewuo and the clinical finishing of Jessica Appiah.
The game promises to be a clash of styles — Ghana’s physicality, pace and never-say-die spirit against Japan’s possession-based, technical approach. A win will see Ghana qualify for the semi-finals, a stage the Black Maidens last reached in 2012 when they won bronze.
