Funke Akindele Reveals Emotional Struggles She Hides From Public

According to a report by Vanguard on Saturday, October 31, 2026, Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has spoken about the emotional difficulties she experiences despite maintaining a cheerful and confident image in public. The award-winning actress explained that her personality in front of the cameras does not always reflect what she goes through privately.

Akindele revealed that although she regularly entertains audiences through her films, television appearances and public engagements, she also experiences moments of emotional weakness. She explained that there are times when she becomes overwhelmed by personal challenges and struggles to maintain her usual positive attitude.

The actress made this disclosure during an interview with CNN, where she discussed the pressures associated with being a public figure. She highlighted how constant attention, public criticism and scrutiny of her personal affairs can affect her emotional well-being.

According to her, she sometimes withdraws from everyone to express her feelings privately, allowing herself to cry before finding the strength to continue with her daily responsibilities.

“I cry. I lock myself in the room, cry, break down, and hit the bed. But I just pick myself up and come back to life,” she said.

The filmmaker further explained that living under constant public observation can make dealing with personal matters particularly challenging. She noted that people’s opinions and reactions sometimes influence how she views her own decisions.

Akindele recalled occasions when she questioned herself and became concerned about how members of the public would interpret her actions. She explained that the possibility of being criticised sometimes makes her reconsider decisions she has already made.

“Sometimes I tell myself, you’ve made a mistake again. How are people going to judge you?” Akindele said.

However, she noted that experience has gradually helped her develop the emotional strength needed to handle difficult circumstances. According to her, she has learnt not to allow public opinions to determine her self-worth or control the direction of her life.

She also emphasised the importance of protecting one’s mental and emotional health while pursuing professional success. She suggested that maintaining meaningful connections with family members, friends and other loved ones provides important emotional support.
