Final Step mixed With ‘threat’ For Rivals As Mamelodi Sundowns Signed Superstar Ecuadorian Player

It has been claimed that Mamelodi Sundowns are advancing in their pursuit of signing Jhegson Méndez, an Ecuadorian international midfielder. The club hopes that this acquisition would bolster their midfield in preparation for the second half of the 2026/27 season.

There are still a few hoops to jump through before the 29-year-old defensive midfielder can officially join the defending South African champions. These include physical exams and contractual requirements.

News out of Ecuador states that Méndez and Sundowns have discussed a possible three-year contract. His contract with Independiente del Valle expired in December, therefore he will be a free agent when he arrives to Chloorkop in January 2027.

Aiming to Enhance Their Midfield, Sundowns

Sundowns are reportedly still looking at experienced possibilities, like Méndez, as they get ready for the local and continental football challenges.

Méndez has played professionally in a number of nations, including Spain, Brazil, and the US, where he has gained invaluable experience. Among his former clubs are Orlando City, São Paulo, Elche, and Los Angeles FC.

The midfielder has experience playing at the highest level of international football, having made 38 appearances for Ecuador’s senior national team. His participation in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar as a national representative showcased his expertise in large-scale tournaments.

Is His Global Career in Danger Due to the Transfer?

A transfer to South Africa may affect Méndez’s worldwide opportunities, despite the possible advantages of signing with Sundowns.

The midfielder is keen to keep his place in Ecuador’s national setup, but he knows that there is still a lot of competition for spots on the squad.

Having a career outside of Europe’s top leagues does not, however, guarantee that a player will no longer be considered for national team duty. Future selection decisions may take his performances, fitness, and consistency into consideration.

Possible Contributions of Méndez to Sundowns

Upon completion of the deal, Méndez has the potential to bolster the defence, add experience, and offer tactical versatility to the midfield. Sundowns’ pursuit of home and continental glory could benefit from his international experience as well.

Until the team makes an official announcement, supporters will just have to wait. You should consider the reported agreement and projected arrival date as unverified news until Sundowns announce the signing.
