Federal Government Offers N50,000 Monthly Cash Relief to Vulnerable Nigerians

According to a report on The Punch, The Federal Government has introduced a new monthly cash assistance programme known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), which will provide eligible vulnerable households across Nigeria with N50,000 in financial support.

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro, has clarified that Nigerians do not need to apply, pay any fees or register through agents to benefit from the initiative. He also cautioned citizens against fraudsters seeking to exploit the programme.

The Federal Government, under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, says the initiative is designed to provide financial relief to households facing increasing living expenses, rising food prices and the growing cost of essential commodities.

Speaking in Abuja on Friday, October 30, 2026, Doro explained that NERSI is a presidential intervention established to provide direct financial assistance to millions of Nigerians experiencing economic difficulties.

According to The Punch, the minister said the programme would offer beneficiaries N50,000 every month to help them manage basic household expenses and reduce the financial pressure caused by rising living costs.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction disclosed that it would work with licensed digital financial service providers to ensure that payments reach beneficiaries through secure channels.

Under the arrangement, selected beneficiaries will receive text messages from the approved service providers requesting their consent before the money is transferred into their bank accounts or mobile wallets.

As reported by Channels Television, Doro emphasised that eligible Nigerians are not required to complete any application process or take additional steps to qualify for the intervention.

He explained that the monthly N50,000 payment would serve as direct financial assistance, enabling vulnerable households to meet their essential needs.

The minister further disclosed that the government could review the amount payable in the future to accommodate changes in the cost of living.

However, beneficiaries would be notified directly before any adjustment is implemented.

Doro also warned members of the public to be careful of individuals who might attempt to deceive Nigerians by pretending to be programme officials or registration agents.

He stressed that beneficiaries should not disclose sensitive banking information, particularly their personal identification numbers (PINs) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs), to anyone claiming to facilitate their payments.

The minister maintained that the government would not demand registration fees or payments from Nigerians seeking to benefit from the scheme.

He added that NERSI would complement other existing Federal Government social protection and economic assistance initiatives aimed at strengthening household resilience and supporting economic stability.

Doro linked the intervention to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, assuring Nigerians that the ministry would prioritise transparency, accountability and proper implementation throughout the programme.

He also provided an official NERSI helpline for Nigerians seeking clarification or wishing to report concerns about the intervention.

In a related development, Legit.ng previously reported that the Auditor-General of the Federation raised concerns over the verification of N33.75 billion reportedly disbursed as cash transfers to 3.29 million beneficiaries in 2023.

According to the audit findings, the authorities could not provide sufficient documentation to establish that the funds reached the intended genuine beneficiaries.

The auditors reportedly identified missing beneficiary records and REMITA transaction statements as major obstacles to confirming the payments.

Consequently, the National Cash Transfer Office (NCTO) was asked to provide proper documentation accounting for the money or refund any portion of the funds that could not be satisfactorily verified.
