“Disappointed Former Black Star Coach” Otto Addo takes GFA to FIFA over contract termination
According to a report by Ghanaweb on Saturday, October 31, 2026, former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has reportedly taken his contract dispute with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to FIFA, seven months after he was relieved of his duties.
The GFA ended the 50-year-old’s second spell in charge of the national team in March 2026, just 72 days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The decision followed a poor run in the pre-tournament friendlies, which included a 5-1 defeat to Austria and a 2-1 loss to Germany. The association announced that the separation took effect immediately.
Addo had guided Ghana to qualification for the World Cup and, at the time of his exit, still had roughly 10 months left on his contract. Reports then suggested he was owed compensation of about $500,000, although the GFA never officially confirmed the figure.
The former Borussia Dortmund talent coach has not been quiet about the manner of his departure. In an interview with German publication 11Freunde in July 2026, he said he never understood the decision to part ways with him. He argued that the expectations set by GFA president Kurt Okraku were too high.
His reported move to FIFA now opens what could become another contractual battle for the association. The GFA has been down this road before. Former Black Stars coach Milovan Rajevac successfully pursued the association at FIFA, a case that reportedly ended in a $117,000 settlement.
It remains unclear how much Addo is claiming or when FIFA is expected to consider the matter. Neither the GFA nor Addo has publicly commented on the reported complaint.
