Da Cruz Makes Strong Claim After Kaizer Chiefs Lose Soweto Derby to Orlando Pirates
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has made a strong statement following his team’s 2-1 defeat to Orlando Pirates in Saturday’s Soweto Derby at a sold-out FNB Stadium.
The French tactician believes his players had enough opportunities to secure victory during the first half and insisted that they should have finished the game before the interval.
Despite the disappointing result, Da Cruz praised his team’s performance but expressed frustration over their failure to convert their chances into goals.
The Glamour Boys started the encounter with determination and managed to create several promising opportunities against their biggest rivals.
Orlando Pirates opened the scoring after 23 minutes through Yanela Mbuthuma, giving the home supporters an early reason to celebrate.
However, Kaizer Chiefs responded quickly, with Pule Mmodi finding the equaliser just six minutes later. The goal brought the visitors back into the contest and ensured that both teams went into the half-time break level.
According to Da Cruz, his players had enough opportunities to score more goals during the opening 45 minutes. He believes Chiefs could have entered the second half with a comfortable advantage if they had been more clinical in front of goal.
Speaking on SuperSport TV after the match, the Chiefs coach made his feelings clear about the missed opportunities.
“In the first half, we must kill this game,” Da Cruz said.
He went further by suggesting that his team should have been leading by two or three goals before half-time.
“Normally, 2 or 3-0 because the goal of Pirates, we’ve seen it’s offside and maybe there is a red card as well,” he added.
“If we score two or three goals, we’re gonna kill this game.”
His comments showed his disappointment with the outcome, particularly because he felt Chiefs had done enough in the first half to put themselves in a stronger position.
However, the second half proved more difficult for the Glamour Boys as Orlando Pirates returned with greater determination.
The Buccaneers eventually found the winning goal through Tshepang Moremi in the 55th minute, putting them ahead for the second time in the encounter.
Despite their efforts to find another equaliser, Chiefs could not break down the Pirates defence before the final whistle.
The victory allowed Orlando Pirates to claim the Soweto Derby bragging rights and move to the top of the Betway Premiership standings.
For Da Cruz and his players, the focus will now be on learning from the defeat, improving their finishing and preparing for their next league assignment.
