Bentil Questions Minerals Commission as $100m Investment Faces Takeover Over Alleged $8m Debt

Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa, has questioned the Minerals Commission’s handling of the controversy involving Nawara Mines, particularly the reported takeover of the company despite its alleged investment of more than $100 million in Ghana.

Bentil expressed concern over claims that the mining company owes approximately $8 million, asking why a debt of that amount could lead to actions that potentially threaten an investment reportedly worth over $100 million.

He argued that the situation raises important questions about how private investments are protected and whether state institutions are following fair procedures when dealing with businesses.

“How can the Minerals Commission accuse a company that has invested over $100 million of owing just $8 million, and then allow its investment to be taken away?” Bentil questioned.

He also warned that developments of this nature could discourage individuals and businesses from committing substantial resources to Ghana’s economy if they fear their investments may be threatened over financial disagreements.

His comments have added to public discussions about the reported takeover of Nawara Mines and whether the necessary legal and administrative procedures were followed before decisions affecting the company were made.

Bentil maintained that the issue extends beyond the disputed financial obligation, highlighting the need for transparency, accountability and proper protection of investors’ interests.

The controversy has also drawn attention to the responsibility of regulatory institutions, particularly the Minerals Commission, to explain the allegations against the company and clarify the circumstances surrounding the reported takeover.

The development has renewed concerns about investor confidence in Ghana’s mining industry, with calls for greater clarity on how disputes between businesses and regulatory authorities are handled.
