Akwatia MP Defends Mahama Against Galamsey Allegations

The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Bernard Bediako Baidoo, has defended President John Dramani Mahama against allegations that his administration is promoting or supporting illegal small-scale mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking during a discussion on Newsfile, the Akwatia MP insisted that President Mahama was not promoting, endorsing or facilitating illegal mining in any way or form.

According to Bernard Bediako Baidoo, attempts to associate the President with activities that contribute to the destruction of Ghana’s environment do not reflect his understanding of the government’s position on the galamsey menace.

His comments come amid renewed political discussions about the government’s efforts to tackle illegal mining, which continues to pose serious environmental challenges across the country.

Galamsey has remained a major national concern because of its devastating effects on rivers, forest reserves and farmlands. Several communities have raised concerns about water pollution, environmental degradation and the destruction of natural resources resulting from illegal mining activities.

The issue has also become a major subject of political disagreement between the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), with both sides facing public scrutiny over their respective approaches to addressing the problem.

Baidoo’s defence of President Mahama appears aimed at rejecting claims that the current administration is encouraging or supporting illegal mining activities.

His remarks are expected to generate further reactions from political commentators and Ghanaians, particularly those demanding stronger action against individuals involved in galamsey.

As the debate continues, public attention remains focused on the government’s enforcement measures, accountability and its ability to protect the country’s natural resources.
