You Made Ghanaian Actors Look Inferior to Nigerian Stars — Parrot Mouth Blasts LilWin
Nigerian-Ghanaian-based comedian Parrot Mouth has criticised actor and filmmaker LilWin over what he describes as comments and actions that have made Ghanaian actors appear inferior to their Nigerian counterparts.
His remarks come amid an ongoing debate surrounding veteran Nigerian actor Kanayo O. Kanayo and comments he recently made about the Ghanaian movie industry, particularly the fees some Ghanaian actors expect when working alongside established Nigerian actors.
While some Ghanaians have condemned Kanayo for what they consider dismissive remarks about local actors, Parrot Mouth has taken a different position, insisting that the veteran actor should not be blamed for making observations that he believes were influenced by how Ghanaian actors were presented to him.
“And for those Ghanaians ‘dragging’ Kanayo that he had said rubbish, bow your heads in shame. You don’t have any right to talk to Kanayo,” he said.
According to Parrot Mouth, LilWin bears greater responsibility for the situation because he believes the actor’s public comments about Nigerian stars created an impression that Ghanaian actors were not operating at the same level.
He specifically pointed to LilWin’s decision to bring several Nigerian actors to Ghana for a movie production and the manner in which he reportedly spoke about the cost of securing their services.
“LilWin, who brought Kanayo, is the problem of Ghana. Everything Kanayo said, is it true? Yes. Why is it true? Because LilWin made Ghanaians look cheap,” Parrot Mouth said.
He argued that statements comparing the earnings and status of Ghanaian actors with those of Nigerian stars could unintentionally damage the reputation of the local industry, especially when such comments are made publicly in the presence of the visiting actors.
Parrot Mouth also took issue with comments attributed to LilWin about the amount of money required to bring Nigerian actors to Ghana, arguing that such statements could make the local actors appear less valuable.
He questioned the message LilWin was sending by highlighting the fees paid to Nigerian actors while also discussing the amounts Ghanaian actors allegedly demand for their services.
According to the comedian, such comparisons could give Nigerian actors the impression that Ghana lacks performers capable of matching their level, which he considers damaging to the country’s movie industry.
He further argued that the controversy should not be used to attack Kanayo, insisting that some of the issues raised by the Nigerian actor deserve consideration rather than condemnation.
Parrot Mouth also rejected suggestions that the Ghanaian movie industry is dying simply because audiences have developed a stronger preference for Nigerian productions.
Instead, he blamed what he described as poor decisions and behaviour by some industry players for contributing to the challenges facing Ghanaian filmmaking.
“Later, they will say Ghana movie is dead, the industry is not dead. It’s people like you collapsing the industry, and that is the truth,” he stated.
The comedian also attributed part of the difference in audience interest to the storytelling approach used in Nigerian films, particularly their ability to maintain suspense and keep viewers interested in unfolding events.
“People watch Nigerian movies because of the suspense, but yours, there is no suspense. Every day, there are bloggers showing what is being done,” he added.
Parrot Mouth’s comments have therefore shifted part of the debate from Kanayo’s remarks to the conduct of Ghanaian industry players, particularly the way local actors and productions are presented when Nigerian stars are involved in Ghanaian movie projects.
