‘You Defended the System Now Devouring You’ – Smith Mbanjwa Delivers Powerful Message to Nomvalo

Political commentator Smith Mbanjwa has penned a strongly worded open letter to former uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) Secretary-General Sibonelo Nomvalo, expressing sympathy over his recent public emotional breakdown while questioning his previous defence of the political leadership style that has now turned against him.

In the letter titled Open Letter to Sibonelo Nomvalo, Mbanjwa acknowledged the personal difficulties Nomvalo described during his Friday press briefing in Durban, particularly his claims that internal party battles had severely affected his marriage and contributed to his wife’s hospitalisation with severe depression.

Mbanjwa said nobody deserved to experience such public humiliation, regardless of their political affiliations or disagreements. He emphasised that political disputes should never overshadow the human suffering experienced by individuals and their families.

However, he argued that Nomvalo was not merely an innocent observer of the political environment he now finds himself confronting.

According to Mbanjwa, Nomvalo was previously at the forefront of defending MKP President Jacob Zuma while other party members were allegedly removed from influential positions amid political conspiracies and disputed intelligence reports.

He pointed to Nomvalo’s allegations involving fabricated intelligence reports, AI-generated photographs allegedly depicting him receiving money from ANC leaders, accusations of political espionage and claims surrounding R20 million allegedly paid to Birchwood Hotel.

Mbanjwa argued that these allegations reflected a longstanding political pattern associated with Zuma’s political career.

To support his argument, he revisited the controversial Bulelani Ngcuka allegations of 2003, when claims emerged that the former National Director of Public Prosecutions was an apartheid-era spy operating under the codename Agent RS452.

Mbanjwa recalled how the allegations were investigated by the Hefer Commission, which ultimately found the dossier against Ngcuka to be without substance. He also referenced Vanessa Brereton’s testimony, which exposed her own involvement in apartheid-era intelligence activities.

Drawing parallels between the two situations, Mbanjwa suggested that the use of rumours, conspiracy theories and questionable intelligence claims had become a recurring feature of Zuma’s political environment.

Nevertheless, he insisted that his letter was not intended to celebrate Nomvalo’s political downfall.

He also challenged Nomvalo’s decision not to blame Zuma directly, arguing that the MKP president must ultimately accept responsibility for decisions made under his leadership.

Mbanjwa concluded by questioning the manner in which Nomvalo was reportedly removed through a WhatsApp communication without a proper handover.

His central message was clear: political loyalty offers no guarantee of protection when leadership decisions and internal power struggles determine one’s political future.
