‘You Defended the System Now Devouring You’ – Smith Mbanjwa Delivers Message to Nomvalo

Political commentator Smith Mbanjwa has sparked debate after publishing a strongly worded open letter to former uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) Secretary-General Sibonelo Nomvalo, following his recent emotional public appearance in Durban. Mbanjwa expressed sympathy for the personal difficulties Nomvalo revealed but also questioned his previous defence of the political leadership style that he is now experiencing firsthand.

In his letter titled Open Letter to Sibonelo Nomvalo, Mbanjwa addressed the emotional impact of the internal disputes within the MK Party. During a Friday press briefing, Nomvalo reportedly spoke about how the party’s internal political battles had affected his family, particularly his marriage. He also claimed that the situation contributed to his wife’s hospitalisation after she experienced severe depression.

Mbanjwa acknowledged the seriousness of these revelations, stressing that no individual deserves to experience such humiliation, regardless of their political position or affiliations. He maintained that political disagreements should never make people overlook the suffering of individuals and their families.

However, the political commentator argued that Nomvalo had previously defended the same leadership environment he now appears to be challenging. According to Mbanjwa, Nomvalo was among those who strongly supported MK Party President Jacob Zuma when other party members were allegedly pushed out of influential positions.

He also referred to Nomvalo’s claims involving fabricated intelligence reports, AI-generated photographs allegedly showing him receiving money from ANC leaders, political espionage and an alleged R20 million payment connected to Birchwood Hotel.

To strengthen his argument, Mbanjwa revisited the 2003 controversy involving former National Director of Public Prosecutions Bulelani Ngcuka, who was accused of having served as an apartheid-era spy under the codename Agent RS452. The Hefer Commission subsequently found the allegations against Ngcuka to be without substance.

Mbanjwa argued that similar accusations and conspiracy claims have repeatedly emerged within Zuma’s political environment. He also questioned why Nomvalo appeared reluctant to hold Zuma directly responsible for the situation.

The commentator further criticised the reported decision to remove Nomvalo through a WhatsApp message without a proper handover.

Ultimately, Mbanjwa’s message was that political loyalty does not guarantee protection when internal power struggles and leadership decisions determine who remains influential within a political organisation.
