X Influencer Emails Bayern Munich in Bid to Stop January Match in Kenya as Controversy Grows
The much-anticipated Bayern Munich versus Ajax friendly match in Nairobi has attracted fresh controversy after a Kenyan social media influencer reportedly contacted the two European clubs, asking them to reconsider their planned visit to Kenya.
Mwabili Mwagodi, popularly known as Jomba on X, revealed that he had sent emails to Bayern Munich and Ajax Amsterdam shareholders, warning them about the political situation in Kenya.
On Tuesday, October 28, Mwabili shared screenshots of what he claimed were emails sent to the two clubs. He also invited his followers to contact him privately if they wanted a copy of the message.
In the emails, the influencer reportedly raised concerns about the Kenyan government and President William Ruto. He also mentioned the death of Bridgit Njoki Wainaina and an alleged abduction involving a foreign national.
Mwabili further warned that the planned match could attract protests inside the stadium. However, the claims contained in his message have not been independently verified.
The controversy comes as excitement continues to build around the January 5, 2027, fixture between Bayern Munich and Ajax at the new Raila Odinga International Stadium in Nairobi.
The 60,000-seater facility at Talanta Sports City is expected to host its first major football match during the historic encounter.
Meanwhile, President William Ruto’s son, George Ruto, has expressed excitement about the event. Sharing the official match poster on Instagram on October 29, he described the fixture as “Very bad,” using a popular expression among young Kenyans to show excitement.
Tickets are expected to go on sale from November 5, while the match will be broadcast internationally.
The government has also indicated that private-sector partnerships will support the event.
With supporters celebrating the opportunity to watch European football giants on Kenyan soil and critics questioning the timing of the fixture, the January encounter continues to generate debate.
Neither Bayern Munich nor Ajax had publicly responded to Mwabili’s emails by the time of publication.
