What Could a Reported R80 Million Transfer Budget Mean for Kaizer Chiefs?

Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung has expressed his full support for head coach Fernando Da Cruz and his technical team despite the club’s inconsistent results this season. Motaung believes the coach has the technical ability and long-term vision required to improve the team, insisting that he must be given enough time to implement his plans at Amakhosi.

Da Cruz joined the Soweto giants at the beginning of the season, replacing the co-coaching duo of Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef. The pair helped Chiefs reach the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup and finish in the top three of the Betway Premiership last season.

However, Da Cruz has faced pressure following a series of disappointing results. Chiefs have drawn five of their last six league matches, leaving them in fifth position with 14 points. They are nine points behind league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played one more game.

Amakhosi have also struggled in cup competitions, having been eliminated from the MTN8 in the first round before exiting the CAF Confederation Cup at the preliminary stage.

Despite these setbacks, Motaung remains confident that the technical team can deliver better results. Speaking on Marawa Sports Worldwide, he praised Da Cruz’s control of the dressing room, his preparation and his commitment to developing young players.

Motaung highlighted Wandile Duba and Mfundo Vilakazi as examples of players who have benefited from the coach’s willingness to trust emerging talent. He believes Chiefs need a long-term approach rather than making decisions based only on short-term results.

The football manager also acknowledged that injuries have affected the team’s stability. He expects the return of injured players to help the squad become more settled as Da Cruz continues adapting to the demands of South African football.

Motaung explained that the Betway Premiership is a challenging competition with unique dynamics that require time for a new coach to understand. He also praised the club’s facilities and sports science resources, saying the technical team works long hours to prepare the players and plan for matches.

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly approved a R80 million transfer budget to support head coach Fernando Da Cruz, according to club manager Bobby Motaung. Da Cruz had asked for more than eight quality players to help the team challenge for domestic cups and the Betway Premiership. Motaung said the board had finally listened and would allow him to sign players of his choice without management interference. The R80 million investment signals Amakhosi’s commitment to compete for major honours this season. The funding should strengthen the squad ahead of the next window.

If confirmed, the reported budget could give Da Cruz an opportunity to address weaknesses in the squad and bring in players capable of helping Chiefs compete more consistently. However, the transfer budget, the coach’s reported request for more than eight players and the claims about recruitment freedom should be independently verified before publication.

Motaung believes that building a successful team requires patience, confidence and a clear plan. He wants young South African players to develop the technical ability and professionalism needed to compete at the highest level of African football, including the CAF Champions League.

For Chiefs supporters, the priority will be seeing the team turn the club’s long-term plans into improved performances and results. With Motaung publicly backing Da Cruz, attention will now turn to whether the coach can guide Amakhosi back into contention for major honours.
