Vavi fires warning at MKP newcomers ‘Nomvalo will not be the last to feel betrayed’ on MKP turmoil
Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has delivered a blunt assessment of the political developments within the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP), warning newcomers that they should not assume they will escape the internal power struggles that have characterised the organisation.
Vavi believes that some individuals joining the MK Party are making a serious mistake by thinking they will be treated differently from those who previously experienced political conflicts within the Tripartite Alliance and the MKP itself.
In his remarks, Vavi pointed to the situation involving former MKP secretary-general Sibonelo Nomvalo, whose departure from the party’s leadership and subsequent public complaints have attracted considerable attention.
“The problem with the fellows joining MKP is that they honestly believe that what happened to others in the Tripartite Alliance, and what has happened to so many MKP members, will not happen to them,” Vavi said.
He further suggested that Nomvalo’s experience should not be viewed as an isolated incident, predicting that similar situations could emerge as internal tensions continue.
“Nomvalo is not the first, and will not be the last, to go on TV crying and complaining about knives in the back and depression taking a toll on family members,” he added.
Vavi’s comments raise broader questions about political loyalty, internal democracy and the treatment of individuals within political organisations.
The MK Party has experienced several leadership changes and internal disagreements since its establishment, with Nomvalo becoming one of the latest prominent figures caught up in the party’s leadership turbulence.
His public statements about the personal and family consequences of the ongoing political battles have also brought renewed attention to the human cost of political disputes.
Vavi’s warning suggests that joining a political movement does not necessarily guarantee protection from internal conflicts, regardless of an individual’s previous political standing or contribution.
As the MKP continues navigating its internal challenges, his remarks are likely to intensify conversations about the party’s leadership culture, political accountability and the treatment of its members.
