The video circulating on social media showed a customer holding a fuel pump and pouring fuel over the top of his car while the fuel tank remained open.
Vivo Energy Kenya strongly condemned the conduct, warning that such actions posed a serious threat to public safety and could endanger lives.
“We strongly condemn this act of irresponsible, reckless and negligent conduct. Such behaviour poses a serious risk to public safety and endangers peoples’ lives,” the statement read.
The company reiterated that safety remained its top priority, distancing itself from the behaviour captured in the footage and emphasising that all its service stations were expected to adhere to established safety standards.
“Safety is our highest priority, and the behaviour shown in the video does not reflect the standards expected at any of the Shell service stations in Kenya,” the statement added.
Vivo Energy Kenya also confirmed that it was reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to the company, the retailer operating the station had reported the matter to the relevant authorities for investigation and further action.
“We take this matter seriously and are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. Our retailer immediately reported it to the relevant authorities for investigation and necessary action,” the statement further read.
The company added that it was reinforcing safety requirements across its network to ensure that its standards were consistently maintained.
It also thanked members of the public who had raised concerns following the circulation of the video.
“We are also reinforcing safety requirements to help ensure our standards are constantly maintained.
“We thank members of the public who have raised concerns and would like to reassure customers that we remain committed to maintaining the highest safety standards across our network,” the statement concluded.
This comes a day after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) responded to concerns by oil marketing companies over wholesale fuel pricing.
In a letter to chief executive officers of oil marketing companies (OMCs) on Tuesday, October 27, the regulator assured them that they will be compensated for excess fuel volumes accessed beyond those factored into current and subsequent pricing cycles.
EPRA said the compensation arrangement was intended to safeguard the country’s fuel supply while addressing the financial exposure marketers face due to delays in adjusting prices to reflect changing costs.
“The Energy & Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) wishes to assure Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) that where individual OMCs access volumes in excess of the volumes factored in the current and subsequent cycles, the excess volumes will be due for advance sales compensation.
“This is in a bid to ensure uninterrupted supply in the country and to compensate OMCs exposure to the price lag,” the letter read.
EPRA clarified that the excess volumes and any additional costs associated with them would be assessed according to a specific order of consideration. It said the verification process would rely on official data from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).
“This excess volume and any incremental costs thereof shall be considered on a first in first out basis and shall be verified based on the data from the Kenya Revenue Authority,” the letter added.
