Sammy Gyamfi Denies NDC Ever Promised to Ban Small-Scale Mining
Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has categorically denied claims that President John Mahama, the NDC, or himself ever pledged to ban small-scale mining if the party was voted into power.
In a statement aimed at setting the record straight, Gyamfi insisted that no such promise was ever made by the party or its flagbearer at any point during their engagements with Ghanaians. He described the assertion as false and urged the public to disregard it, noting that it does not reflect the NDC’s position on small-scale mining.
Gyamfi explained that the NDC’s focus has always been on regulating and sanitizing the small-scale mining sector rather than imposing an outright ban. According to him, the party recognizes the important role small-scale mining plays in the livelihoods of many Ghanaians and would therefore not take any action that would unnecessarily deprive citizens of their means of survival.
He emphasized that the NDC’s approach is centered on ensuring responsible and sustainable mining practices, combating illegal mining activities, and protecting the environment, while simultaneously safeguarding the interests of legitimate small-scale miners. He added that the party remains committed to policies that balance environmental protection with economic opportunity.
Gyamfi further accused political opponents of deliberately misrepresenting the NDC’s stance on small-scale mining in order to score political points and create confusion among voters. He called on Ghanaians to rely on accurate information and to reject what he described as propaganda designed to tarnish the party’s image.
The NDC communications officer reiterated that President Mahama and the party have always been clear about their intentions regarding the mining sector, and he challenged anyone with evidence to the contrary to produce it. He concluded by reaffirming the NDC’s dedication to the welfare of small-scale miners and its commitment to responsible natural resource management.
