Pirates Star Nkota Faces Emotional Soweto Derby Return After Previous Heartbreak
Orlando Pirates winger Mohau Nkota is attracting attention ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs, with the youngster having another opportunity to rewrite his story in one of South African football’s biggest encounters.
The 21-year-old recently returned to action after coming off the bench during Pirates’ convincing 3-0 victory over Milford FC in the Carling Knockout Round of 16. His introduction was particularly encouraging, as he provided an assist for fellow substitute Camren Dansin, reminding supporters of the attacking quality he brings to the Buccaneers.
With the Soweto Derby approaching, Nkota’s return could not have come at a more important time for coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.
The speedy winger offers something different in the attacking department, particularly his ability to beat defenders, accelerate into open spaces and create dangerous opportunities from wide positions.
His direct style of play could become an important weapon against Kaizer Chiefs, especially if Pirates manage to exploit spaces behind the Amakhosi defence.
However, there is another interesting storyline surrounding Nkota’s possible involvement this weekend: his previous experience in the Soweto Derby.
Nkota knows exactly how demanding this fixture can be. His previous Soweto Derby appearance came during the painful 2-1 Nedbank Cup final defeat to Kaizer Chiefs in May 2025, when Amakhosi ended their long trophy drought at Pirates’ expense.
That defeat was particularly difficult for the Buccaneers because they had entered the final hoping to add another major trophy to their collection. Instead, their biggest rivals celebrated a memorable victory, leaving Pirates supporters disappointed.
Nkota’s return to Orlando Pirates has added another interesting dimension to his career.
After an impressive breakthrough campaign in 2024/25, during which he registered seven goals and five assists across competitions, the winger secured a move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq in July 2025.
However, his stay abroad was relatively short, with Pirates securing his return on a season-long loan in September 2026.
The experience of playing outside South Africa has given the youngster an opportunity to develop his game and gain valuable experience in a different football environment.
His return is particularly important for Pirates as they compete on multiple fronts this season.
The 3-0 victory over Milford demonstrated Pirates’ attacking strength, with Thapelo Mokobodi scoring before Tshepang Moremi completed a brace.
Nkota’s contribution after coming on was another positive development, especially considering that he helped create a scoring opportunity for Dansin.
Against Chiefs, his pace and unpredictability could offer Pirates another attacking dimension, whether he starts or comes off the bench.
However, the Soweto Derby is a completely different challenge. Chiefs will be determined to frustrate their rivals, particularly after their own 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy boosted confidence ahead of the encounter.
