People Elected Buhari, Who Was Considered A Strong Leader; How Did It End Up? In A Disaster– Gumi
Nigeria’s search for a capable president often centres on finding someone described as strong, decisive and willing to confront difficult problems. However, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi believes the country should look beyond the personality of whoever occupies the presidential seat.
During an interview on PAPShow, the Islamic cleric questioned the assumption that electing a powerful leader automatically guarantees national progress.
He recalled the election of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who entered office with a reputation as a strong leader. Gumi used Buhari’s eventual performance as an example of why Nigerians should not place all their hopes in one individual’s leadership qualities.
He argued that national development also depends on the behaviour of ordinary citizens, education and the willingness of people to act responsibly.
To explain his point, he gave an example of a plumber who might choose cheaper, secondhand materials instead of the quality products requested for a job.
His argument suggests that corruption and poor standards cannot be addressed through presidential authority alone.
For Nigeria to make meaningful progress, Gumi believes improvements must happen at both government and individual levels. A country cannot depend entirely on changing its president while ignoring the attitudes and everyday decisions of its citizens.
