Nwaneri makes u-turn, pushes to play for Super Eagles

Spread the word Arsenal youngster Ethan Nwaneri is reportedly considering switching his international allegiance from England to Nigeria, raising hopes that the Super Eagles could secure the services of one of the most exciting young attacking talents in English football.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder, who is currently on a season-long loan at German Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, is said to be open to representing Nigeria after previously attracting the attention of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle. Blueprint reports

Reports indicate that Chelle had held discussions with Nwaneri’s representatives in London over the possibility of convincing the youngster to commit his international future to Nigeria.

Although neither the player nor the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially confirmed an agreement, the latest reports have renewed speculation about his international future.

Nwaneri has also reportedly started following the Super Eagles’ official Instagram account, a development that has attracted attention among Nigerian football supporters.

However, his social media activity does not amount to confirmation that he has decided to switch allegiance.

Born in England to a Nigerian father and an English-French mother, Nwaneri is eligible to represent Nigeria through his paternal heritage.

He has, however, represented England at several youth levels, including the Under-16, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 teams.

His involvement with England’s youth sides has not automatically ruled out a possible switch to Nigeria, as FIFA regulations provide circumstances under which players who have represented one country at youth level can change their sporting nationality.

Nwaneri is yet to make a competitive senior international appearance for England, leaving Nigeria with an opportunity to pursue his services, subject to the applicable FIFA eligibility requirements.

The midfielder’s potential decision would represent a significant addition to the Super Eagles, particularly given his ability to operate as an attacking midfielder, right winger and advanced playmaker.

His technical ability, close control, movement and capacity to create scoring opportunities are among the qualities that have made him highly rated since his emergence at Arsenal.

Nigeria’s interest in Nwaneri is not new.

In March 2025, reports indicated that Chelle planned to meet the youngster in London as part of efforts to persuade him to represent the Super Eagles.

The Nigerian coach was understood to be interested in adding creativity and attacking quality to his squad, with Nwaneri viewed as a player capable of strengthening the team’s options in the final third.

The discussions reportedly continued as Nigeria monitored the midfielder’s progress in European football.

Chelle has also been reported to have watched Nwaneri during his loan spell at French club Olympique Marseille, where the youngster spent the second half of the 2025/2026 season.

His interest in the player reflects Nigeria’s broader efforts to attract eligible young footballers with Nigerian heritage who are developing within Europe’s major football systems.

However, England also have an interest in retaining Nwaneri, who has progressed through their youth international structure and was included in the country’s senior team’s pre-tournament training camp in Florida ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

That invitation did not constitute a competitive senior appearance and therefore did not, by itself, end his eligibility to represent Nigeria.

Nwaneri’s rise through English football has been remarkable.

He joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of eight and progressed through the club’s youth system before making his senior debut in September 2022.

At 15 years, five months and 28 days, he became the youngest player to feature in the history of the English Premier League when he came on as a substitute against Brentford.

The appearance brought him considerable attention and marked the beginning of expectations that he could become one of Arsenal’s important young players.

He subsequently made progress within Mikel Arteta’s first-team setup, earning opportunities in domestic and European competitions.

In January 2026, Arsenal sent him on loan to Marseille for the second half of the 2025/2026 campaign to gain more regular first-team experience.

He made 11 appearances and scored twice during his spell in France before returning to Arsenal at the end of the season.

On September 1, 2026, Borussia Dortmund announced his signing on a season-long loan from Arsenal, which will keep him in Germany until the end of the 2026/2027 campaign.

The move offers the attacking midfielder another opportunity to develop in a competitive European league and gain experience at a club known for providing opportunities to young talents.

Should Nwaneri eventually commit to Nigeria, he would offer Chelle another creative option in the attacking department.

The midfielder’s versatility could allow him to operate behind the striker, from the right side of the attack or in a more advanced central midfield role.

His arrival would also increase competition for places in a Super Eagles squad that already includes established attacking players such as Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon.

More importantly, securing his commitment would represent an investment in Nigeria’s future, considering his age and the experience he is already accumulating in European football.

Nigeria has previously benefited from players who developed within England’s football system before choosing to represent the Super Eagles.

Ola Aina, for instance, represented England at youth level before switching to Nigeria, while Alex Iwobi also chose to play for the country of his Nigerian heritage after progressing through Arsenal’s academy.

Nwaneri’s situation could provide another opportunity for the Super Eagles to strengthen their talent pool with a player developed in one of Europe’s most competitive football environments.

For now, however, the possibility remains a developing story rather than a completed international switch. The final decision rests with the player, while the NFF would need to ensure that all applicable FIFA requirements are satisfied before any change of sporting nationality is completed.

With his potential, technical quality and Nigerian heritage, Nwaneri’s international future will remain an important subject of interest among Super Eagles supporters.
