Nigeria 2-1 Mexico: Umejiaku and Dunstan goals send Flamingos into Fifa U17 WWC last eight

According to a report by Daily Post on Friday October 30, 2026, Nigeria’s Flamingos have secured a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 encounter on Thursday.

Head coach Hakeem Busari’s side produced an impressive performance, with goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Akpan Dunstan ensuring the Nigerian youngsters progressed to the last eight.

The Flamingos took the lead in the 40th minute when Umejiaku found the back of the net, giving Nigeria a deserved advantage heading into the half-time break.

Nigeria continued to press after the restart and eventually doubled their lead in the 72nd minute through Dunstan, putting the team in a commanding position.

Mexico attempted to fight their way back into the contest and managed to score a late goal through Emily Delgado in the 10th minute of stoppage time.

However, the Mexican side could not find another equaliser as Nigeria held on to claim a 2-1 victory and confirm their qualification for the quarter-finals.

The result extends the Flamingos’ positive run in the competition following their impressive 3-1 victory over defending champions North Korea in their final group-stage fixture.

Busari’s players have now carried that momentum into the knockout stages and will be looking to maintain their progress as the tournament continues.

Nigeria will face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.

The Flamingos will hope to overcome their next opponents and move another step closer to lifting the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy.
