Meet Dr Naim Bilal: Standard Group’s New CEO Set to Lead Media Giant

The Standard Group PLC has appointed Dr Naim Bilal Yaseen as its new Group Chief Executive Officer, marking another leadership change at one of Kenya’s longest-established media organisations.

In a notice dated Thursday, October 29, the company confirmed that Yaseen had been selected following a competitive recruitment process. His appointment will take effect on November 1, 2026, when he formally assumes the position.

The appointment comes after the announcement that outgoing CEO Chaacha Mwita would leave the company on the same date. Mwita had been confirmed as the substantive Group CEO in April 2026 after previously serving in an acting capacity.

The board expressed confidence in Yaseen’s ability to guide the company through its next phase, particularly as the media industry continues to change. It expects him to strengthen the group’s digital and commercial operations while protecting the editorial independence that supports public trust in its journalism.

Yaseen brings more than 30 years of experience in media, public institutions, communication and corporate governance. His career has included senior positions in both the public and private sectors, giving him experience in managing media operations and handling communication within major institutions.

Among his previous roles is that of Managing Director at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC), where he was responsible for overseeing the operations of the national broadcaster. He also served as Director of Public Affairs and Communication at the Judiciary, a position that involved managing public communication and engagement with different stakeholders.

Before joining public service, Yaseen worked in the media industry, including at Nation Media Group, where he held senior editorial and management positions.

His academic background also spans several fields. He holds a PhD in Communication Studies, a Master of Arts in Communications Policy, a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Laws degree. He is also an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

His appointment comes at a challenging time for traditional media companies, which are facing increased competition from digital platforms, changing audience habits and pressure to develop sustainable sources of revenue.

The Standard Group operates several media platforms, including The Standard newspaper, KTN television, Radio Maisha, Spice FM, The Nairobian and its digital news platforms. Maintaining their competitiveness while adapting to changes in the media landscape will be among the key responsibilities awaiting the incoming CEO.

The company’s board has placed particular emphasis on improving digital performance and strengthening commercial operations. At the same time, it has highlighted the importance of maintaining editorial independence as the organisation works to retain the confidence of its audiences.

Yaseen takes over after a relatively short tenure by Mwita, whose departure was announced earlier in October. The board did not publicly disclose the reason for Mwita’s resignation but acknowledged his contribution to the company.

As he prepares to assume office, attention will turn to the direction he intends to take the organisation, especially in expanding its digital reach, improving business performance and maintaining its position in Kenya’s competitive media industry.

His appointment is expected to usher in a new chapter for the Standard Group as it works to address the demands facing modern media organisations.
