Meet Alex Kipchumba Who is Ruto’s Most Trusted Bodyguard

In the highly choreographed world surrounding President William Ruto, where every movement is planned and every public appearance attracts intense scrutiny, some of the most important figures remain almost invisible.

Among them is Alex Kipchumba Korir, a security officer associated with the President’s close-protection detail and increasingly recognisable to Kenyans who closely follow Ruto’s public engagements.

Korir operates in a profession where visibility is rarely the objective. Close protection demands discipline, vigilance, physical fitness and the ability to anticipate danger before it becomes visible. Unlike political aides and government officials, security officers around the President are not expected to dominate the headlines. Their success is measured by what does not happen—the absence of security breaches and the safe movement of the Head of State.

Images circulating online have identified Korir alongside President Ruto’s aide-de-camp, Brigadier Fabian Lengusuranga, with social-media users referring to him as a commando.

However, publicly available official records do not provide enough verified biographical information to establish his full military career, rank or personal history. The Ministry of Defence’s publicly available 2023 specialist-officer shortlist contains several officers named Alex Korir, but it does not establish that any of those individuals is the same person serving in Ruto’s close-protection team.

That distinction is important because presidential security is an area where speculation can easily overtake fact. A close-protection officer’s duties may include advance security assessments, movement coordination, protection of the principal and rapid response to emerging threats. Much of that work is necessarily conducted away from cameras and public attention.

For Ruto, whose presidency has entered an increasingly competitive political environment ahead of the 2027 General Election, the security team around him has become a familiar presence at rallies, State functions, foreign trips and other high-profile engagements. Yet the officers themselves rarely speak publicly about their assignments.

Korir therefore represents a less-publicised side of the presidency: the men and women whose responsibility begins where politics ends. While politicians compete for votes and officials defend government policies, close-protection officers remain focused on a more immediate responsibility—ensuring that the President reaches his destination safely.

His profile also illustrates the unusual nature of presidential security work. To the public, an officer standing a few metres from the President may appear to be merely another member of the entourage. Behind that calm appearance, however, is a professional whose attention must remain fixed on the surroundings, the crowd, escape routes and any unusual movement.

In an administration where the President’s public appearances routinely attract thousands of people, that vigilance is indispensable. And for Korir, the greatest measure of success may be precisely what the public never notices: doing the job so effectively that nothing happens.

During Ruto’s trip of the USA for the UN General Assembly, Korir is part of the President’s delegation.
