Mdaka Unveils South Africa U23 Team for Upcoming Qualifiers
JUST IN: Mdaka Announces South Africa U23 Squad as Orlando Pirates Lead the Way
South Africa Under-23 head coach Raymond Mdaka has announced his final squad for the upcoming Olympic Games qualifiers against Madagascar, with Orlando Pirates youngsters among the players attracting attention ahead of the important two-legged encounter.
The announcement represents another significant step in South Africa’s preparations for the qualifying campaign, as Amaglug-glug look to move closer to securing a place at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Mdaka has assembled a talented group of young footballers drawn from local clubs and overseas teams, giving the national side a mixture of domestic experience and international exposure. The selected players will be expected to demonstrate their quality and help South Africa overcome a difficult challenge against Madagascar.
According to iDiski Times, Mdaka’s final squad consists of 24 players, with Bafana Bafana youngster Shandre Campbell among the notable selections. The winger has recently attracted attention following his involvement with the senior national team, strengthening his position as one of the promising young talents in South African football.
Orlando Pirates have several exciting prospects in the national setup, including midfielder Camren Dansin, defender Neo Rapoo and attacking players Mpho Padime and Simphiwe Selepe. Their inclusion highlights the Buccaneers’ contribution to the development of young South African footballers.
The strong representation from Pirates also reflects the importance of nurturing emerging talent capable of progressing from youth football into the senior professional game. For the selected youngsters, the upcoming qualifiers provide an opportunity to gain valuable international experience while competing for a place in the final team.
However, Pirates are not the only club contributing to Mdaka’s squad. Kaizer Chiefs have young talents such as Mfundo Vilakazi, Luke Baartman and Faiz Abrahams, while Mamelodi Sundowns are represented by prospects including Gomolemo Kekana and Bennet Mokoena.
The squad also includes overseas-based players, offering Mdaka additional options as he works to build a balanced team capable of competing under pressure.
South Africa’s immediate focus will be on negotiating the Madagascar challenge. The two sides are scheduled to meet on 14 November, with the return fixture set for 17 November at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.
The qualifiers form part of the pathway towards the 2027 CAF Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, which will also serve as Africa’s qualifying tournament for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
For Mdaka, the objective will be to ensure his players approach both matches with discipline, confidence and determination. South Africa will need to be efficient in front of goal while remaining defensively organised if they are to progress to the next stage.
With several promising players available, expectations will be high as Amaglug-glug prepare for the challenge. The coming matches could prove important in shaping the future of South African football and keeping the country’s Olympic ambitions alive.
