Manqoba Mngqithi Clarifies His Young Africans Exit

Manqoba Mngqithi Reveals Why He Left Young Africans “I Would Not Compromise My Principles”

South African coach Manqoba Mngqithi insists that his departure from Tanzanian giants Young Africans SC was driven by a clash of principles and professional values rather than football results, despite an encouraging start to his tenure.

Manqoba Mngqithi has opened up about his abrupt departure from Young Africans SC, explaining that protecting his beliefs, ethics and professional principles ultimately became more important than remaining in charge of the club.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows coach parted ways with the Tanzanian outfit after a short spell that included winning the Community Shield and guiding the team into the CAF Champions League group stages.

His departure came after 106 days in charge, despite recording 10 victories in 13 matches across all competitions. Mngqithi has maintained that the split should not be viewed simply as a consequence of results on the pitch.

Speaking about the circumstances surrounding his exit, Mngqithi made it clear that his personal and professional convictions played a decisive role in the separation.

“I wouldn’t really want to say what happened at Yanga, you know me better, I would say it was just a matter of principles,” he said, as reported by iDiski Times.

The coach explained that he reached a point where preserving his principles, beliefs and ethics was essential, adding that he continued to hold the club, its supporters, players and staff in high regard.

His comments suggest that the circumstances surrounding his departure involved issues beyond the team’s performances, although he stopped short of providing a complete account of every disagreement.

Mngqithi also referred to events that occurred before matches against Simba SC and TRA United, indicating that tensions had developed before the decision to part ways was finalised.

Mngqithi’s short tenure had produced encouraging achievements, making his departure a talking point among football followers in South Africa and Tanzania.

Yanga progressed into the CAF Champions League group stages and won the Community Shield under his leadership. Nevertheless, the coach insisted that the separation was not primarily about his coaching ability or the team’s results.

“I wouldn’t think it had anything to do with football because I respect everybody there. The team was good to me, the president was good to me, my staff worked very hard, we achieved most of our targets,” he explained.

His comments indicate that he recognised the support he received from parts of the club while acknowledging that certain matters ultimately proved difficult to accept.

In a separate interview, Mngqithi raised concerns about professionalism and player discipline at Yanga, alleging that some players could miss training without facing sufficient disciplinary consequences.

He argued that maintaining standards required cooperation between the coaching staff and management, particularly when enforcing players’ responsibilities.

According to Mngqithi, disagreements over how such situations were handled contributed to tensions during his time at the club. These remain his account of the circumstances, rather than an independently established assessment of Yanga’s internal operations.

The coach also addressed speculation surrounding his relationship with midfielder Stephane Aziz Ki, suggesting that tactical considerations and possible discussions between the player and management had become part of the wider debate. He did not identify that issue as the sole reason for his departure.

Mngqithi’s departure brings an unexpected end to his brief Tanzanian adventure, but his achievements during that period demonstrate that the team made progress in key competitions.

His decision to speak publicly about principles and professional standards has also placed the relationship between coaches, players and club management under scrutiny.
