Kumasi Faces Month of 9am-5pm Power Cuts From October 30

Parts of Kumasi and surrounding communities face a month of scheduled daytime power cuts from Friday, October 30, to Sunday, November 29, 2026, as the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) complete a major transmission upgrade.

In a joint statement issued in Tema on Thursday, October 29, the two companies said the 161kV Anwomaso-Ahodwo (K1-K2) Transmission Line Upgrade Project has reached 70 per cent completion. The remaining work involves stringing conductors on the transmission towers, a stage the companies describe as safety-critical for engineers and the public.

On the specific weekdays when work reaches their section of the line, affected communities will experience interruptions between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Weekends are excluded from the outage schedule.

The project is being carried out under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and is expected to be completed by the end of November 2026. GRIDCo and ECG say the upgrade will strengthen transmission infrastructure and improve the reliability of supply in Kumasi and surrounding communities.

ECG says it will publish a detailed schedule listing the specific communities and dates affected so customers can plan. At the time of the announcement, that detailed list had not yet been released.
