Kenya Secured a Ksh 270M Grant for Climate-Smart Agribusiness
The Kenyan government, through National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, formally signed a US$2.08 million (approximately Ksh 270 million) grant agreement funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Disbursed in partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) through Country Director Matteo Marchisio, the Climate Smart Agribusiness Partnerships for Resilience (CSAPR) grant is designed to strengthen climate resilience and safeguard rural smallholders against environmental shocks.
The funding will complement the ongoing Integrated Natural Resources Management Programme (INReMP) by integrating real-time Climate Information Systems (CIS) directly into key agricultural supply chains.
By embedding localized meteorological data and predictive climate intelligence into smallholder decision-making, the initiative aims to reduce crop losses, optimize seasonal planting cycles, and enhance water-resource management across climate-vulnerable agricultural zones.
CS John Mbadi highlighted that the capital injection aligns with the government’s bottom-up economic transformation agenda, which prioritizes food security, agricultural modernization, and rural poverty alleviation.
IFAD reiterated its commitment to supporting sustainable rural transformation, emphasizing that bridging the gap between global climate financing and local farming practices remains vital for Africa’s long-term food sovereignty.
As implementation begins across target counties, the signing of the CSAPR agreement sets a crucial benchmark for climate finance integration, institutional public-private partnerships, and sustainable agricultural development in Kenya.
