Kaizer Chiefs Receive Major Boost as Langelihle Phili Returns to Training Ahead of Soweto Derby

Kaizer Chiefs have received a potential boost ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates, with exciting winger Langelihle Phili reportedly back in training as the Amakhosi prepare for one of their biggest matches of the season.

The 21-year-old attacker has been missing from competitive action since scoring against Mamelodi Sundowns on 15 August 2026. His return to training will therefore be encouraging news for the Chiefs technical team and supporters who have been waiting to see him back in action.

Phili arrived at Naturena from Stellenbosch FC in August after an impressive campaign that established him as one of the promising young attacking talents in South African football. His performances for Stellies earned him recognition, while his goal-scoring ability and attacking qualities made him an exciting addition to the Amakhosi squad.

However, his promising start at Chiefs was interrupted by an ankle injury that kept him on the sidelines for several weeks. The setback came at an unfortunate time, particularly after he had begun making a positive impression in the famous gold-and-black jersey.

His goal against Sundowns demonstrated the quality he could bring to Fernando Da Cruz’s attacking department. Before the injury, Phili had featured in three matches for Chiefs across competitions, scoring once and showing glimpses of his potential.

With the Soweto Derby approaching, his progress in training could not have come at a better time for the Soweto giants. Chiefs are preparing to face their fiercest rivals at FNB Stadium on Saturday, 31 October, in a fixture that carries enormous significance for both clubs.

Amakhosi will be eager to build on their recent 3-0 victory over TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout, a result that has boosted confidence within the squad ahead of the showdown.

Phili’s availability would give Da Cruz another attacking option, particularly if the winger can demonstrate that he has regained his fitness following his lengthy absence.

His pace, direct approach and ability to threaten opposition defenders could prove valuable against a Pirates side that has enjoyed encouraging results in recent meetings between the two Soweto rivals.

Nevertheless, returning to training does not automatically guarantee selection. The Chiefs medical and technical teams will need to assess Phili’s fitness before deciding whether he is ready to feature in such a demanding encounter.

For the young winger, the immediate priority will be completing his recovery and regaining the sharpness required to compete at the highest level.

Chiefs supporters will be hoping his return marks the beginning of an important period for the talented attacker. With the Soweto Derby looming, having another influential player available could provide a timely lift as Amakhosi look to deliver a memorable performance against Orlando Pirates.
