Heavy Rains Cause Flooding in Tana River County as Hundreds of Families Are Displaced

Hundreds of families in Tana River County have been affected by flooding following heavy rains pounding parts of the Kenyan Coast, with several households forced to abandon their homes as rising waters spread into nearby villages.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, at least 302 households have been displaced, while another 3,156 households have been affected by the floods in the region.

In an update shared on Friday, October 30, the humanitarian organisation revealed that the situation had worsened after Tulu and Minjila dams in Tana Delta overflowed, sending large amounts of water into residential areas and surrounding villages.

The overflowing dams followed heavy downpours across the coastal region, leaving families struggling to cope with the rising water levels.

The Kenya Red Cross confirmed that emergency response efforts were already underway, with teams working alongside other partners to assess the needs of affected communities and support families forced to leave their homes.

The organisation further disclosed that 175 of the 302 displaced households had received emergency supplies, including food, tarpaulins and blankets, from the county and national governments. The remaining affected families were expected to receive assistance as relief operations continued.

The flooding has also raised concerns in neighbouring Lamu County, where some homes in Hindi and Witu have reportedly started experiencing rising water levels.

The latest developments come days after the Kenya Meteorological Department issued a heavy rainfall advisory, warning several parts of the country to prepare for intense downpours. Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale were among the counties listed in the weather warning.

Residents in flood-prone areas were cautioned to remain vigilant, particularly those living near rivers and in low-lying areas, as heavy rainfall can trigger flash floods even in places that have not experienced significant downpours.

The unfolding situation has once again highlighted the challenges faced by communities in flood-prone parts of the Coast region, where heavy rains can disrupt livelihoods, destroy property, and force families to seek temporary shelter.

As rainfall continues to affect parts of the region, affected families will be hoping for additional assistance and improved weather conditions to prevent further displacement and damage.
