Gumi Reveals What Security Forces Allegedly Find on Arrested Boko Haram Members

According to remarks made by Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi during an interview on PAPShow on Thursday, October 29, 2026, questions have been raised about the financial resources available to Boko Haram insurgents and the possible sources of their funding.

Gumi spoke about Nigeria’s security challenges while referring to comments attributed to former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, concerning foreign currencies allegedly found on members of Boko Haram. The cleric said the reported discovery of dollars and euros among suspected insurgents raised important questions about how the group obtains the money needed to sustain its activities.

According to Gumi, the former military chief had stated that security personnel sometimes found foreign currencies on Boko Haram members when they were arrested. He said, “The former CDS said, when they catch Boko Haram, they see them with foreign dollars and euros.”

The cleric’s comments focused attention on the financial side of terrorism and the need to investigate the sources of money available to armed groups operating in Nigeria. He suggested that understanding how insurgents obtain their resources could provide useful information about the networks supporting their operations.

Boko Haram has continued to pose security challenges, particularly in Nigeria’s North-East, where attacks, killings and other violent activities have affected communities for years. The group’s ability to maintain its operations has also raised questions about the supply of weapons, food, equipment and other resources needed by its members.

Gumi also highlighted the importance of addressing the social and economic conditions that contribute to insecurity. He has repeatedly argued that poverty, inadequate education and limited economic opportunities should be considered when developing solutions to Nigeria’s security problems.

The issue of foreign currencies allegedly recovered from suspected insurgents also points to the importance of financial investigations. Security agencies need reliable intelligence to identify possible sources of funding, trace financial transactions and establish whether wider networks are supporting terrorist activities.

While military operations remain an important part of the fight against insurgency, Gumi believes that other measures are also necessary to achieve lasting results. These include investigating financial networks, improving opportunities in vulnerable communities and addressing the social conditions that allow insecurity to continue.

His remarks have therefore brought renewed attention to the need for a broader approach to tackling terrorism in Nigeria, particularly the importance of understanding how armed groups finance their activities.
