A 58-year-old man arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of Gqeberha resident Shaun Marais did not appear in court on Friday after the case was not enrolled due to “insufficient evidence.”

The spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in the Eastern Cape, Luxolo Tyali, said the man would be released from custody for now, while the investigation continues.

The man’s arrest came after police announced on Thursday that Walmer detectives had made a breakthrough following five days of intensive Investigation.

Police also confirmed that the SUV allegedly involved in the incident had been impounded for further analysis.

Marais, 56, was fatally stabbed during an alleged road rage confrontation on Circular Drive in Lorraine at about 8.27pm on Friday, 23 October.

He had been driving his white Honda Accord after having dinner with his wife, Carina, to mark the end of a long working week.

The couple had spent the evening together before travelling home in separate vehicles.

According to a tribute shared by a family friend on social media, an encounter on the road escalated into a confrontation, leaving Carina without her husband and the family struggling to come to terms with his death.

The driver of a blue or silver SUV allegedly stabbed Marais during the altercation.

Marais then attempted to drive away from the scene but lost control of his vehicle a short distance down the road.

He lost control of his vehicle a short distance away and crashed into a wall near the intersection of Circular Drive and Henri Botha Street.

The SUV driver left the scene before police arrived.

Anyone with information that could assist detectives is asked to contact Lieutenant Colonel Estelle Edwards of the SAPS Walmer Detectives on 079 520 3256 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
