Ghana Prisons Service Elevates 15 Senior Officers In Major Leadership Promotion Exercise

According to a report by Citi FM on Friday October 30, 2026, the Ghana Prisons Service has announced the promotion of 15 senior officers to higher ranks, marking a significant development in the institution’s leadership structure and efforts to strengthen its administration and operational effectiveness.

The promotions involve seven Deputy Directors of Prisons who have been elevated to the rank of Directors of Prisons, while eight Assistant Directors of Prisons have also been promoted to Deputy Directors of Prisons.

The appointments were announced in an official statement issued by the Ghana Prisons Service on Thursday, October 29, 2026, following the approval of President John Dramani Mahama.

According to the Service, the appointments were made in accordance with Article 207 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and on the advice of the Prisons Service Council. The promotions took effect from July 1, 2026.

Among the seven officers elevated to the position of Directors of Prisons are Abraham Nii Moi Allotey, who serves as the Western Regional Commander and Officer-in-Charge of Sekondi Central Prison, and David Ofosu Addo, who is the Head of Government Business at the Prisons Headquarters.

Thompson Otsyokpo, the Bono-Ahafo Regional Commander and Officer-in-Charge of Sunyani Central Prison, has also been promoted alongside Edward Ashun, who serves as the Greater Accra Regional Commander and Commanding Officer at the Prisons Headquarters.

The other officers promoted to the rank of Director of Prisons are Joseph Asabre, the Central Regional Commander and Officer-in-Charge of Ankaful Maximum Security Prison; Alfred Moses Cudjoe, a General Staff Officer at the Prisons Headquarters; and Samuel Fiifi Dontoh, who heads the Procurement Department at the Service’s headquarters.

Meanwhile, eight Assistant Directors of Prisons have been elevated to the rank of Deputy Directors of Prisons.

They are Joseph Aggrey-Graham, Gandaa Bekanuo Zunuo, Aaron Agbenyegah Agbo, Michael Osei Akoto, Forson Odei, Naja Daniel Donkor, Nasom Kwabena Bawah and Matilda Nyampong.

The Ghana Prisons Service has congratulated all the newly appointed officers and expressed confidence in their ability to discharge their new responsibilities effectively.

The Service also used the announcement to reaffirm its commitment to maintaining high professional standards, discipline and effective leadership across its operations.

“The Service remains committed to professionalism, discipline, effective leadership and the continued advancement of its mandate of safe custody, welfare, reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners,” the statement said.

The latest promotions are expected to strengthen the leadership capacity of the Ghana Prisons Service, particularly in regional commands, prison facilities and key administrative departments.

The elevation of officers occupying important positions across the country also highlights the institution’s continued efforts to improve supervision, management and service delivery within the correctional system.

The Ghana Prisons Service plays a critical role in Ghana’s security and justice administration, with responsibilities extending beyond the confinement of convicted persons to include their welfare, rehabilitation and preparation for reintegration into society.

The newly promoted officers are therefore expected to bring their experience and leadership skills to bear as the Service continues to pursue its constitutional mandate.

The announcement was signed by Janet Asabea, Deputy Director of Prisons and Head of the Public Affairs Department.

The Service wished all 15 officers success as they assume their new ranks and responsibilities.
