Gachagua’s Lockdown Prediction Sparks Questions as He Reveals What Could Force Kenya Into Shutdown

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has raised concerns about the possibility of a nationwide lockdown in Kenya following the Ebola outbreak, claiming he has received information suggesting the government could consider such a move.

Speaking during an interview with KTN News on Wednesday, October 28, Gachagua said he had heard different accounts from people who approached him about the outbreak and its potential impact. According to him, some claimed the situation might be used to seek international funding, while others warned it could lead to restrictions that might affect political campaigns ahead of the 2027 General Election.

He added that another group had cautioned him that the disease was real and required careful handling by the government. However, Gachagua did not provide evidence that a lockdown was being planned, stressing that his remarks reflected information he had received rather than an official announcement.

Kenya is currently dealing with the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, with health authorities confirming nine cases, including two deaths. The Ministry of Health has intensified containment measures through isolation, contact tracing, and monitoring of exposed individuals. On October 26, officials announced that the first 20 people placed under monitoring had completed the 21-day observation period without symptoms and were cleared to return home, while others remain under follow-up.

Public attention remains focused on the government’s response and the possible effects of the outbreak on daily life. A lockdown would carry serious consequences for businesses, schools, transport, and political gatherings.

As of the latest reports, Gachagua’s claim does not establish that a lockdown is imminent. Kenyans are advised to rely on official updates from the Ministry of Health for accurate information regarding any new restrictions.
