‘Erratic power supply makes smartphone’s battery life necessary’
In Nigeria, a country of more than 100million smartphone users, a dead phone can mean missed opportunity, stranded commuters, and loss of millions of naira.
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote said in a recent interview that he would rather go to prison than lose his phone. This is true for millions of Nigerian phone users. Their smartphones mean a lot to them.
But if Dangote can afford 24 hours power supply, which means his phone can’t go dead, many Nigerians can’t.
With power cuts and long days on the move many Nigerians have had their phones’ battery hit the dead end many times, some at the middle of a vital meeting.
So battery life is no longer a spec sheet detail for poor and averagely comfortable Nigerians, it is now a peace of mind.
Faced with an unpredictable national electricity grid, frequent power outages, and long commutes, she said Nigerian consumers now prioritise battery endurance over nearly every other feature when purchasing a mobile device.
A phone that dies mid-day is considered an “expensive inconvenience” rather than a functioning smartphone.
Experts said erratic power supply now makes battery life a necessary consideration before buying a smartphone in Nigeria.
This demand has transformed the local tech landscape, sparking an aggressive arms race among global smartphone manufacturers targeting the Nigerian market.
For years, a 5,000mAh battery was considered the industry gold standard. However, tech brands have realised that the Nigerian market has a unique appetite for much larger capacities. Devices are no longer built just to survive the workday; they are built to survive prolonged blackouts.
The highest smartphone capacity (mAh) in Nigeria currently starts with a 10,000mAh phone.
This is the largest listed capacity for a smartphone sold in Nigeria. It pairs that capacity with 100W HyperCharge and up to 27W wired reverse charging, plus a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display and 5G support. It is followed by a 8,340mAH capacity phone.
The phone with this 8,340mAh battery has a 67W HyperCharge, along with up to 22.5W wired reverse charging. It also has a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED display, Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 platform, and IP66/IP68/IP69/IP69K ratings under specified test conditions.
This has a 45W fast charging, plus up to 10W reverse charging. It uses a 6.8-inch 120Hz display and MediaTek Helio G92 Max chipset.
It is closely trailed by a 7,700mAh phone capacity with 45W Turbo Charging and up to 22.5W wired reverse charging.
Similarly, a 7,500mAh with 45W Turbo Charging, and up to 22.5W wired reverse charging makes one of top long lasting battery life.
A 7,200mAh capacity phone is also among the top long lasting battery life phones.
A 7,000mAh battery power life with 18W fast charging, aimed at long daily use at an entry price.
A 6,700mAh battery capacity phone can also be considered while looking for phones with long lasting battery life.
Speaking with Daily Trust, Anne Wang, REDMI Marketing Director at Xiaomi International, said “in choosing phone to buy, users want devices they can rely on every day and keep with confidence over time.”
She said battery life is no longer just a technical specification—it is a critical tool for daily survival and economic productivity.
