Bobby Motaung Opens Up About His Changing Role at Kaizer Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs Football Manager Bobby Motaung has clarified his position within the club, insisting that he has not stepped away from management but is now focused more on offering guidance and experience to the current leadership.

The long-serving football administrator made the comments while discussing the evolution of the Soweto giants and the changing responsibilities within their management structure. His remarks provide insight into how the club is balancing its established traditions with the demands of modern football.

Motaung, who has played an important role in the club’s administration for many years, acknowledged that the football industry has changed significantly. According to him, the growing importance of technology, specialised departments and technical analysis has influenced how clubs operate and make decisions.

Speaking on Marawa Sports Worldwide, Motaung explained that his responsibilities have evolved as Kaizer Chiefs continues to develop its organisational structure.

“There’s certain things we can’t step aside from, the Chiefs legacy, the chairman’s legacy,” Motaung said.

He emphasised that his commitment to the club remains strong, pointing out that he is still part of the organisation and intends to continue contributing to its progress.

“I’m part of the family. I’m part of the organisation. I’m serving the organisation,” he added.

Motaung also explained that his current focus is on sharing the knowledge and experience he has accumulated throughout his years in football administration. Rather than attempting to control every aspect of the club’s operations, he wants to support the next generation of leaders as they take on greater responsibilities.

“So my focus is more about giving back with experience and supporting the new generation,” he explained.

His comments come as Kaizer Chiefs continues to adapt to a more modern football environment, where recruitment decisions increasingly involve scouting networks, sports science, performance analysts and advanced technology.

The club’s Sporting Director, Kaizer Motaung Jr, has taken on a more prominent role in technical operations, working within the modern structures that guide the team’s football strategy.

Bobby acknowledged that these developments require changes in how responsibilities are distributed. However, he stressed that the adjustment does not mean he has abandoned his position within the organisation.

He also highlighted the importance of mutual respect and cooperation among members of the club’s leadership, suggesting that different roles can complement one another as the organisation moves forward.

“I’m there as the elder one. I’m there through and through. I’ll never depart. I’ll never be away. I’m part of the system,” he said.

For Kaizer Chiefs supporters, Motaung’s explanation offers further clarity about his place within the club. His message is that while responsibilities may change with time, his commitment to the Amakhosi institution remains unchanged.

As the Soweto giants continue working towards sustained success, his experience and the contributions of the current leadership will remain important elements of the club’s long-term development.
