Atiku Abubakar: Everywhere In The World, There Are Subsidies On Everything – Sheikh Gumi

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a prominent Islamic cleric, has spoken about Nigeria’s fuel subsidy policy, arguing that government subsidies are practised in different parts of the world and can help ease the financial burden on citizens when properly implemented.

Gumi made this known during an interview on PAPShow on Thursday, October 29, 2026, while discussing the decision by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to remove the petrol subsidy in 2023 and the economic consequences that followed.

The cleric explained that although Nigeria’s economic situation made subsidy removal difficult to avoid, the government should have introduced sufficient support programmes to cushion the effects on ordinary Nigerians, particularly those with limited financial resources.

According to Gumi, “Everywhere in the world, there are subsidies on everything.” He made this observation while pointing out that governments in various countries provide financial assistance to support essential goods and services.

He further maintained that subsidy programmes could improve citizens’ living conditions if public funds were handled responsibly. However, he cautioned that corruption and poor financial management could prevent such interventions from achieving their intended objectives.

Gumi also expressed concern that removing petrol subsidies without establishing adequate welfare measures has increased the difficulties facing Nigerian households. He noted that higher transportation expenses and the rising cost of essential commodities have placed additional pressure on people already struggling financially.

The Islamic scholar argued that the government should strengthen social intervention programmes capable of providing direct assistance to disadvantaged Nigerians.
