Wontumi Poison Plot Under Investigation

The Ghana Prisons Service has launched an investigation into allegations that some inmates at Nsawam Medium Security Prison planned to poison former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

Chief Public Relations Officer of the Service, CSP Abdul Latif Adamu, confirmed that investigations had commenced to establish the facts surrounding the alleged threat and determine whether anyone was involved.

According to reports, the matter was brought to the attention of prison authorities by Wontumi’s aide, Dr Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, rather than through a direct complaint from the politician himself.

CSP Adamu explained that the Service was working to verify the allegation and would determine the appropriate action based on the outcome of its investigations.

He indicated that the findings would be made public after the inquiry had been completed, assuring the public that the authorities were taking the matter seriously.

The investigation follows claims by Dr Boakye-Danquah that five inmates had allegedly discussed a plan to poison Wontumi while he was in custody.

However, the Ghana Prisons Service has not confirmed that a poisoning attempt occurred. It has also declined to verify reports that five inmates were transferred to different cells in connection with the alleged plot.

The Service has meanwhile assured the public that Wontumi remains safe in custody, emphasising its responsibility to protect inmates and establish the truth behind the reported threat.

The alleged incident has drawn public attention to prison security and the welfare of inmates as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding the claims.

The outcome of the investigation is expected to clarify whether the alleged plot had any factual basis and whether further action will be necessary.
