Nigerian Entertainers Who Walked Away From Fame by Ngozi Ibe 3 hours ago in Entertainment Share on WhatsAppShare on FacebookShare on XTelegram For many Nigerian entertainers, fame brings recognition, lucrative opportunities and a loyal fan base. However, some have stepped away from the spotlight to pursue different careers, focus on family, or explore other interests. While some stayed away from acting for years, others have reinvented themselves behind the scenes or eventually returned to the screen.
Here are Nigerian entertainers whose career journeys took them away from the limelight. 1. Regina Askia-Williams Regina Askia-Williams was one of Nollywood’s recognisable faces in the 1990s, gaining popularity as Tokunbo Johnson in the television series Fortunes. She later relocated to the United States, where she pursued a career in healthcare and became a family nurse practitioner. In a 2021 interview with Punch, Askia discussed her work as a healthcare practitioner in New York. Although she stepped away from regular Nollywood acting, she has remained connected to Nigeria and the entertainment industry, including through a reported return to acting in 2026.
2. Maureen Solomon-Okereke Maureen Solomon-Okereke was a familiar face in Nollywood in the early 2000s, featuring in films such as Not Without My Daughter and Women Affair. At the height of her career, she stepped away from acting to concentrate on raising her children. Speaking on Channels Television’s Rubbin’ Minds in July 2026, the actress explained that balancing film locations with motherhood became increasingly difficult after the birth of her second child. She said she had no regrets about the decision, although she has since returned to Nollywood after years away from the screen.
3. Ego Boyo Ego Boyo became a household name through her role as Anne Haastrup in the television series Checkmate, which aired in the early 1990s. She also starred in the film Violated. However, Boyo eventually shifted her attention from acting to film production. In a 2025 interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, she explained that she had discovered she enjoyed producing more than acting, dismissing speculation that her husband had prevented her from continuing her screen career. Through Temple Productions, she has worked on projects including Keeping Faith, A Hotel Called Memory and The Ghost and the House of Truth. Her journey illustrates how an entertainer can step away from the front of the camera without leaving the industry altogether.
4. Shaffy Bello Shaffy Bello first attracted public attention through her appearance in Seyi Sodimu’s 1997 hit song Love Me, Jeje. She subsequently moved to the United States, then returned to Nigeria and built a career in acting. Her return to Nollywood included roles in productions such as Tinsel, Gbomo Gbomo Express and Chief Daddy. Although she did not permanently abandon entertainment, her journey demonstrates how an extended absence from the Nigerian spotlight can precede a successful return.
5. Pat Attah Pat Attah was one of Nollywood’s popular male actors during the industry’s early home-video era. Known for his roles in romantic dramas, he built a following among moviegoers. He later relocated to Germany, where he pursued a life away from the regular attention that came with acting in Nigeria. His departure from the local movie scene became part of the wider conversation about Nollywood stars who moved abroad and pursued different priorities. His current professional activities should be confirmed before publication.
6. Sandra Achums Sandra Achums was another recognisable face in Nollywood during the 1990s and early 2000s. She featured in several films before relocating to Germany, where she stepped away from the regular demands of the Nigerian movie industry. Her reduced screen presence has made her one of the actresses audiences remember from Nollywood’s earlier years. However, details about her current professional activities should be verified before publication.
7. Bukky Wright Bukky Wright built a successful acting career across both English- and Yoruba-language Nollywood productions. She later spent time in the United States, where she reportedly explored opportunities outside acting, including technology. Her career reflects the changing priorities of established entertainers who seek new professional opportunities beyond the screen. However, she should not be described as having permanently retired from acting without confirming her current activities.
8. Charles Okafor Charles Okafor established himself as an actor and filmmaker during Nollywood’s earlier years. He later became associated with Christian ministry, moving into a different area of public service while maintaining a lower profile in mainstream entertainment. His career illustrates how some actors have pursued religious commitments alongside, or instead of, the work that initially brought them recognition. Details of his present activities should be confirmed before publication.
The journeys of these entertainers show that leaving the limelight does not always mean abandoning a career permanently. Some have pursued healthcare, family life, film production, technology or religious ministry, while others have returned to acting after years away. Their experiences also challenge the assumption that fame must remain an entertainer’s lifelong priority. For some, success has meant finding fulfilment beyond the cameras and choosing when, how and whether to return.
