Spanish Ambassador Backs Black Challenge Ahead of 2026 Amputee Football World Cup
Spain’s Ambassador to Ghana, Ángel Lossada Torres-Quevedo, has expressed support for Ghana’s national amputee football team, the Black Challenge, as the side prepares for the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico.
The ambassador met 15 players and members of the technical team at the Mendiata Hotel in Accra, where he encouraged the squad and pledged to continue supporting their efforts.
He said the team’s ambitions extended beyond winning matches, highlighting the importance of promoting the rights, dignity and inclusion of persons with disabilities through sport.
Addressing the players, Mr Lossada Torres-Quevedo described them as allies and praised their achievements, assuring them of his willingness to support their cause.
He acknowledged that his national allegiance would remain with Spain if the two countries faced each other in the tournament’s final, but stressed that the broader struggle for equal rights and opportunities for persons with disabilities was more important than sporting rivalry.
The ambassador noted that the players had already demonstrated their abilities and deserved encouragement as they pursued success on the international stage.
His visit also underscored the potential of sporting partnerships to strengthen relations between countries while promoting inclusion and respect for human rights.
President of the Ghana Amputee Football Association, Foster Kwarteng, expressed gratitude to the Spanish ambassador for his continued support for disability sports in Ghana.
Mr Kwarteng particularly acknowledged the ambassador’s assistance to the National Paralympic Committee of Ghana and his willingness to engage with organisations working to improve opportunities for persons with disabilities.
He said the ambassador had consistently made himself available to support their activities, describing his contribution as significant to the advancement of disability sports in the country.
The Black Challenge will represent Ghana at the 2026 Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico, where the team will seek to build on its achievements and raise the country’s profile in international amputee football.
The ambassador’s message comes as the team continues its preparations, with his support highlighting the importance of ensuring that athletes with disabilities receive recognition, equal opportunities and the backing needed to compete at the highest level.
