Nigeria Possible Semi-Final Opponent Confirmed After Today’s Draws
According to a report by Daily Post on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, could face either China or Brazil in the semi-finals of the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, following the latest results and confirmation of the tournament’s knockout-stage fixtures.
The possible opponents became clearer after Thursday’s Round of 16 encounters, which saw Nigeria and China secure qualification for the quarter-finals.
Nigeria booked their place in the last eight after recording an impressive 2-1 victory over Mexico, while China eliminated France through a penalty shootout following a goalless draw.
The Flamingos produced another encouraging performance against Mexico, with Oluebube Umejiaku opening the scoring in the 40th minute before Mary Dunstan doubled Nigeria’s advantage in the 71st minute.
Although Mexico pulled a goal back late in the encounter, Nigeria successfully protected their advantage to secure qualification for the next round.
The result means Nigeria will face Venezuela in the quarter-finals on Sunday, November 1, with the encounter scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM Nigerian time.
Venezuela secured their qualification after producing one of the biggest surprises of the knockout stage, defeating Germany 1-0 to eliminate the European side from the competition.
Meanwhile, China’s qualification following their penalty shootout victory over France means they will meet Brazil in another quarter-final encounter.
Brazil reached this stage after surviving a dramatic contest against Poland, which ended 3-3 before the South American representatives eventually secured an 8-7 victory on penalties.
According to the confirmed knockout-stage arrangement, the winners of Nigeria’s encounter against Venezuela will face the winners of China’s meeting with Brazil in the semi-finals.
This means that if the Flamingos overcome Venezuela, their next opponents will be either China or Brazil, depending on the outcome of Sunday’s other quarter-final fixture.
Both countries represent potentially difficult challenges for Nigeria, particularly Brazil, which has established a strong reputation in international women’s football.
However, the Flamingos have already demonstrated their ability to compete against strong opposition, especially after defeating defending champions North Korea 3-1 during the group stage.
That victory provided a significant confidence boost for the Nigerian youngsters, who subsequently carried their momentum into the knockout rounds.
Nigeria will now concentrate on overcoming Venezuela before considering a possible semi-final meeting with China or Brazil.
The semi-final encounter involving the winners of these two quarter-final matches is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
A victory against Venezuela would see Nigeria reach the semi-finals of the U-17 Women’s World Cup for the second time in four years, having previously finished third at the 2022 tournament in India.
For the Flamingos, the opportunity to reach another semi-final represents an important step towards their ambition of competing for the world title in Morocco.
