Nigeria Possible Semi-Final Opponent Confirmed After Quarterfinal Fixtures is Confirmed

According to a report by ESPN on Thursday, October 29, 2026, Nigeria’s Flamingos have discovered the two nations standing between them and a potential place in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup currently taking place in Morocco, following the conclusion of the Round of 16 matches.

The Nigerian team could face either Brazil or China in the semi-finals if they successfully overcome Venezuela in their quarter-final encounter scheduled for Sunday, November 1.

Nigeria booked their place in the quarter-finals after recording an impressive 2-1 victory against Mexico on Thursday, continuing their journey in the prestigious youth competition.

Oluebube Umejiaku opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 40th minute, taking advantage of an error in Mexico’s defensive organisation to put the Flamingos ahead before halftime.

The African representatives strengthened their position in the 71st minute when Mary Dunstan found the back of the net to double their advantage.

Although Emily Delgado scored a consolation goal for Mexico during stoppage time, Nigeria maintained their narrow lead until the final whistle to secure qualification.

Elsewhere, China progressed to the quarter-finals after overcoming France in a closely contested encounter that required a penalty shootout to determine the winner.

Neither country managed to score during normal time, leaving the outcome to be decided from the penalty spot.

Chinese goalkeeper Niu Ziqi emerged as a crucial figure after making two outstanding saves during the shootout, helping her team eliminate the French side.

China will now confront Brazil in the quarter-finals, with the victorious team progressing to face the winner of Nigeria’s encounter against Venezuela.

Brazil, meanwhile, advanced to the last eight after surviving a dramatic contest against Poland on Wednesday.

The South American representatives were involved in an entertaining 3-3 draw before eventually securing an 8-7 victory during the penalty shootout.

However, Nigeria must concentrate on defeating Venezuela before considering the possibility of facing either of those two countries.

Venezuela demonstrated their strength on Wednesday by recording a surprising 1-0 victory over Germany, eliminating one of the highly regarded European teams from the tournament.

That result suggests the Flamingos could face a difficult challenge against a Venezuelan side that has already demonstrated its ability to produce important results against strong opposition.

The quarter-final meeting between Nigeria and Venezuela is scheduled to take place at the Mohammed VI Football Academy in Morocco on Sunday, November 1, with the match expected to begin at 7:00 PM Nigerian time.

Brazil and China will also compete for a semi-final place on the same day.

If Nigeria overcome Venezuela, their next assignment will be against the winner of the Brazil versus China encounter on Wednesday, November 4.

The Flamingos will approach the upcoming fixture with confidence following their impressive performances in the competition, including their memorable 3-1 triumph over defending champions North Korea during the group stage.

Nigeria will also be motivated by their previous achievement at the 2022 edition, where they reached the semi-finals before eventually finishing third.

Securing another quarter-final victory would put the Nigerian youngsters within touching distance of repeating that achievement while strengthening their ambition of claiming their first U-17 Women’s World Cup title.

For now, Brazil and China remain Nigeria’s two possible semi-final opponents, but the Flamingos must defeat Venezuela before discovering which country they will face in the last four.
