But beyond his first appearance, a bigger question emerges: can the 29-year-old establish himself in Spain and force his way back into Ghana’s Black Stars plans?

Opoku featured in Las Palmas’ 3-1 victory over RSD Alcala in the first round of the Copa del Rey on Tuesday night, helping the Canary Islands outfit secure passage to the next stage after extra time.

The Ghanaian centre-back had waited several months for his competitive debut since joining Las Palmas in August 2026 on a two-year contract. Visa complications and an injury setback delayed his introduction, making his appearance against Alcala an important milestone in his Spanish adventure.

Having previously played for Turkish side Kasımpaşa, Opoku arrived in Spain hoping to establish himself in a new environment and demonstrate that he still has plenty to offer at a competitive level.

His debut was encouraging, with the defender contributing to a victory that underlined Las Palmas’ determination to progress in the competition. Kirian Rodríguez scored twice, while Manuel Fuster added another goal to secure the 3-1 win, with Luis Simón scoring for Alcala.

However, Opoku’s night ended prematurely after he picked up a knock in the 73rd minute and was replaced by Taisei Miyashiro. The extent of the injury will be important in determining whether he can build on his first appearance and compete for a regular place in the team.

At 29, Opoku is entering a stage of his career where consistency and regular playing time are particularly important. He is no longer a young prospect waiting for an opportunity to develop; he needs to demonstrate that he can become a dependable option for Las Palmas.

His experience in European football could work in his favour. Before moving to Spain, he featured for clubs including SC Amiens in France and Kasımpaşa in Turkey. That background has exposed him to different tactical systems, physical demands and competitive environments.

Las Palmas’ decision to offer him a two-year contract suggests that the club sees value in his services. Nevertheless, a contract alone does not guarantee regular football. Opoku must remain fit, adapt to the demands of Spanish football and convince the coaching staff that he deserves a place in the starting line-up.

The immediate concern is his fitness following the knock sustained against Alcala. A quick recovery would allow him to continue building match sharpness and compete for selection in the league.

If he can secure regular minutes in the Spanish Segunda División, his move could become a significant step in his career. However, if injuries and limited opportunities persist, his progress could stall before he has established himself at the club.

Opoku’s Las Palmas debut also raises questions about his international prospects.

The defender has previously represented Ghana at senior level, and his European experience could make him a useful option if he returns to consistent competitive football. However, playing abroad is not, by itself, enough to guarantee a recall to the Black Stars.

Ghana need defenders who can deliver reliable performances, maintain fitness and compete against high-quality opposition. Opoku must show that he can meet those demands week after week before a serious case for international selection can be made.

At 29, he still has time to contribute to the national team, particularly if he establishes himself as a regular starter in Spain. His experience could be valuable in a defensive unit that requires depth, competition and dependable alternatives.

However, his prospects will depend on his performances at club level, the demands of the national team’s technical staff and the form of other available centre-backs.

The key issue is whether Opoku can turn his long-awaited debut into a sustained run of football. One appearance may reopen the conversation, but consistent performances would provide the strongest argument for his return.

Opoku’s debut against RSD Alcala represents an encouraging start after months of waiting, but it is too early to draw firm conclusions about his long-term future in Spain.

The next stage of his career will depend on how quickly he recovers from his injury concern, how well he adapts to Las Palmas’ system and whether he can earn the trust of the coaching staff.

For the Black Stars, his progress is worth monitoring. A fit and regularly playing Opoku could strengthen Ghana’s defensive options, while a prolonged spell on the sidelines would make an international return more difficult.

Opoku still has a realistic opportunity to revive his club career in Spain and put himself back into contention for the Black Stars. But the decisive factor will not be his reputation or his debut — it will be his ability to stay fit, earn regular playing time and deliver consistent performances for Las Palmas.
