Mamelodi Sundowns Owner Patrice Motsepe’s R28.5 Million Payday Revealed
South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe earned approximately R28.5 million from his executive role at African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) during the 2026 financial year, adding to his substantial business wealth.
Motsepe, who serves as the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and owns Mamelodi Sundowns, received the remuneration for his time as ARM’s executive chairman between 1 July 2025 and 15 February 2026.
According to the mining company’s financial disclosures, the businessman received a combination of his basic salary, bonuses and long-term incentives before stepping down from his executive position in February 2026.
Motsepe founded African Rainbow Minerals in 2003 and became South Africa’s first Black billionaire in 2008, according to Forbes.
His latest earnings highlight the business interests behind one of the most influential figures in African football, whose wealth extends beyond his involvement in the sport.
According to ARM’s remuneration disclosures, Motsepe’s R28.5 million earnings comprised approximately R6.7 million in basic salary, R9 million in cash bonuses and sign-on awards, and R12.8 million in long-term incentives.
His total remuneration was slightly higher than the approximately R28.1 million earned by ARM’s chief operating officer, Phillip Tobias, making Motsepe one of the company’s highest-paid executives during the financial year.
However, Motsepe’s executive career at the mining group changed in February 2026 when he stepped down as executive chairman and retired as an employee of the company on 16 February.
He subsequently continued serving as ARM’s non-executive chairman, a position that allowed him to remain involved with the business while complying with the Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s listing requirements.
Motsepe also received approximately R381,000 in fees for his responsibilities as the company’s non-executive chairman and director after leaving his executive position.
Beyond his corporate remuneration, Motsepe could receive a substantial payout from his indirect shareholding in African Rainbow Minerals following the group’s improved financial performance.
ARM declared a final gross dividend of 700 cents per share for the 2026 financial year, creating the prospect of a significant dividend payment for its major shareholders.
Based on Motsepe’s indirect holding of more than 91 million shares, the billionaire could receive approximately R638 million in dividends.
The potential payout is considerably higher than his executive remuneration, highlighting the role that share ownership and investment returns play in building and maintaining substantial wealth.
As a major figure in South African business and football, Motsepe continues to maintain interests across different sectors. His leadership at CAF and ownership of Mamelodi Sundowns have also made him a prominent personality in African sport.
His earnings from ARM demonstrate how his mining interests remain an important part of his financial portfolio, even after his departure from the company’s executive structure.
