La General Hospital to Be Completed by End of 2027 – Akandoh

Ghana’s Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has projected that the reconstruction of the La General Hospital in Accra will be completed by the end of 2027, with commissioning scheduled for January 2028.

The minister announced the timeline after inspecting the ongoing construction works on Thursday, October 29, 2026. He expressed satisfaction with the progress made but urged the contractor to accelerate activities to ensure the project meets its deadline.

Mr Akandoh said the government would continue monitoring the project until the facility was completed, commissioned and ready to provide healthcare services to the public.

He noted that significant progress had been recorded since his previous visit, including construction work on the upper floors. However, he maintained that the contractor could increase the pace of work to ensure timely delivery.

The minister also stressed the importance of the hospital to residents in La and surrounding communities, who have had to rely on other health facilities following the closure of the original hospital.

The Health Minister disclosed that the project is estimated to cost €50 million, including the supply of hospital equipment. He said approximately €15 million had been paid, while the latest payment certificate submitted by the contractor had been processed and forwarded to the Ministry of Finance.

Mr Akandoh rejected suggestions that payment delays should be used to justify any slowdown in construction, insisting that the government was making efforts to meet its financial obligations.

He further revealed that consultants had been asked to review the design of the emergency department to determine whether its bed capacity could be increased to meet growing healthcare demands.

According to the minister, inadequate emergency beds remain a challenge at major hospitals, sometimes making it difficult for patients requiring urgent treatment to gain admission.

The proposed review is intended to ensure that the hospital’s emergency unit has sufficient capacity relative to the facility’s overall bed numbers.

The reconstructed La General Hospital is expected to provide approximately 160 beds and improve access to healthcare for residents of La and neighbouring communities.

Its return to service is also expected to reduce pressure on the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ridge Hospital and LEKMA Hospital, which have accommodated patients who previously depended on the La facility.

The reconstruction project has experienced delays linked to funding challenges since the original hospital was demolished. The government is now seeking to complete the facility and restore its role in healthcare delivery in the Greater Accra Region.
