Kenyan Man Quits His Well-Paying Job in Kenya, Goes to US, Starts Shoe Polishing

A Kenyan businessman has revealed how a shoe-polishing job in Las Vegas earned him far more than he expected on his very first shift. Serengeti Falcons says he walked away with $2,200 (about KSh 286,000) in a single night, thanks largely to wealthy clients who paid well above the listed price.

Speaking in an interview with Alex Mwakideu, Falcons recalled how he arrived in the city and took up the job. “Nilienda Las Vegas, kazi ilikuwa ya kupiga rangi kiatu. So my first night, nilichapa kazi nikatengeneza $2,200. First night,” he said.

According to him, polishing one shoe was advertised at $11, roughly KSh 1,500. Many of his customers, however, were rich patrons, including celebrities, and some handed him $100 (about KSh 13,000) for the same service.

That is nearly 10 times the posted charge. “Unapigia mtu rangi imeandikwa ni $11 kiatu moja, lakini wanakupea mia. Niliangalia, nikasema basi wacha Mungu aitwe Mungu,” he said.

The earnings changed how he viewed the opportunities available through the job, since a modest listed price could still translate into substantial income. He added that he worked four days a week during that period.

Falcons also recalled that the man training him advised against telling others how much he had made, citing the financial hardships many people face in Africa. Despite the warning, he said he disagreed with the idea of hiding his earnings.

Today, Falcons is the chief executive officer of Discover Africa Safaris. He has also spoken about working as a limousine driver, during which he says he served high-profile personalities, including Snoop Dogg and Oprah Winfrey. The shoe-polishing stint is another chapter in the journey that led him into the business world.

For him, that first night remains a memorable example of how an ordinary-looking job can deliver an unexpected reward when customers are willing to pay beyond the advertised price.
