Kasmuel Challenges ODM: What Will Luo Nyanza Gain From a Ruto Deal?

ODM youth figure Kasmuel McOure has challenged his party’s leaders to focus on roads, hospitals, schools and clean water instead of bargaining for government positions in negotiations with President William Ruto ahead of the 2027 General Election.

McOure argues that any political agreement between the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) should be measured by improvements in people’s lives, not simply by the number of positions awarded to party members.

His remarks come as ODM faces an internal disagreement over whether to support Ruto’s re-election bid before securing a written agreement guaranteeing the party a share of government.

Some senior ODM leaders have demanded a 50-50 power-sharing arrangement, including the Deputy President’s position. They argue that a formal agreement would protect the party’s interests and prevent political promises from being abandoned after the election.

McOure, however, has questioned whether ODM should demand half of the government without first demonstrating that it can secure victory in its traditional strongholds.

He wants political negotiations to focus on tangible development, including hundreds of kilometres of tarmac roads in Luo Nyanza, better-equipped hospitals, reliable access to clean water and improved schools.

The activist has also accused some leaders of putting personal interests ahead of the party’s future. Those allegations remain his claims and have not been independently established.

In recent public remarks, McOure has argued that ODM’s bargaining power has weakened since the death of its former leader, Raila Odinga. He has urged the party to strengthen its organisation, mobilise voters and involve young people in important decisions.

The debate has exposed different views within ODM over how to approach the next election. Supporters of a written agreement believe the party needs firm commitments before offering its political support. Those favouring cooperation without strict conditions argue that working with the government could help deliver development projects.

The outcome of the negotiations could shape ODM’s position in the August 2027 General Election and determine the terms of any formal partnership with UDA.

For residents waiting for better roads, functioning hospitals, clean water and quality education, the central question remains whether the political discussions will translate into visible improvements in their daily lives.
