Kaizer Chiefs Make Their Position Clear on Fernando Da Cruz
Bobby Motaung Sends Clear Message on Fernando Da Cruz as Chiefs Demand Patience
Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung has delivered a firm message to those questioning the club’s technical direction, insisting that head coach Fernando Da Cruz deserves time to implement his plans at Naturena.
Despite growing frustration among supporters over inconsistent results, Motaung has publicly backed the French coach and his technical team, making it clear that Amakhosi will not make decisions about coaching personnel simply because of short-term pressure.
Speaking on Marawa Sports Worldwide, Motaung expressed confidence in Da Cruz’s leadership and the work being done behind the scenes at the Soweto giants.
“I’m happy,” Motaung said. “My coach owns the change room, controls the change room. If you hear how people are fired in other clubs or whatever, we’re not in a circus game.”
His comments come at a challenging period for Chiefs, whose recent performances have raised questions about their ability to maintain consistency in the Betway Premiership.
Da Cruz took over following the departure of the co-coaching partnership of Cedric Kaze and Khalil Ben Youssef, who helped the club secure a place in the CAF Confederation Cup group stage and finish in the league’s top three last season.
Although Da Cruz enjoyed a promising start, Chiefs have struggled to turn their performances into victories. Five draws in their last six league matches have slowed their progress, leaving them fifth on the table with 14 points, nine behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played one more game.
Their campaign has also suffered setbacks in cup competitions, with early eliminations from the MTN8 and the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary rounds adding to the pressure.
However, Motaung believes the club must remain committed to its long-term strategy rather than make decisions based solely on immediate results.
“We’re looking at the vision and forward thinking, and we’re looking at a plan that we agreed on with the coach long term,” he explained.
The Chiefs football manager also highlighted Da Cruz’s willingness to give younger players opportunities, pointing to Wandile Duba and Mfundo Vilakazi as examples of players benefiting from the coach’s trust.
Motaung further praised the technical team’s preparation, training methods and use of the club’s facilities, which include sports science resources designed to support player development and performance.
He acknowledged that injuries have complicated the team’s progress but maintained that patience remains essential.
“I think we’ve hired a high-level coach, he just needs time,” Motaung concluded.
For Chiefs, the coming fixtures will provide another opportunity for Da Cruz to demonstrate progress. While supporters continue to demand improved results, the club’s leadership appears determined to give the coach time to build a competitive side.
