GRIDCo and ECG Announce Planned Outages in Ashanti Region as Transmission Upgrade Hits 70%
The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced that planned power outages will affect parts of the Ashanti Region as work on a major transmission upgrade reaches 70 percent completion. The two companies say the outages are necessary to allow engineers to carry out critical works linked to the ongoing project.
According to the announcement, the interruptions form part of the scheduled maintenance and construction activities required to complete the transmission upgrade. The project is aimed at strengthening the region’s power supply infrastructure and improving the reliability of electricity delivery to homes, businesses, and industries.
GRIDCo and ECG explained that the upgrade has progressed steadily and is now about 70 percent complete. They noted that the remaining works require temporary shutdowns of certain lines and equipment so that engineers can safely install new components and connect them to the existing network.
The utilities indicated that affected areas and the timing of the outages will be communicated to the public in advance so that customers can plan accordingly. They urged residents and businesses in the Ashanti Region to bear with the inconvenience, stressing that the disruptions are temporary and will yield long-term benefits once the upgrade is finished.
The companies also appealed to the public to treat the planned outages as distinct from unplanned faults, noting that scheduled works are communicated ahead of time and are essential to the successful completion of the project. They assured customers that every effort will be made to keep the duration of the outages to a minimum.
Once completed, the transmission upgrade is expected to enhance voltage stability, reduce supply interruptions, and support growing demand for electricity in the Ashanti Region. GRIDCo and ECG thanked customers for their patience and cooperation as the project moves toward completion.
