The clash ended 2-2 in regulation time before Paraguay converted seven penalties to Ghana’s six, denying the Black Comets a place in the semi-finals.

Ghana had reached the last eight after recording a 2-1 victory over Korea Republic and a 5-2 triumph against Mexico in the round of 32 and round of 16 respectively on Wednesday, extending their winning streak to seven matches.

Despite their exit from the title race, the Ghanaian youngsters will remain in Azerbaijan to compete in placement matches, as the tournament’s format allows teams to continue playing after elimination.

The team will now drop to tier B and compete with the other losing quarter finalist.

Paraguay proved a difficult test for Ghana after the West Africans had enjoyed a dominant run through the group stage and knockout rounds.

The Black Comets topped Group W with five victories, defeating Uzbekistan 4-1, Myanmar 7-1, Guam 7-0, the Bahamas 7-0 and Kazakhstan 2-1.

Their subsequent wins over Korea Republic and Mexico took their tally to 34 goals before the quarter-final. The two goals against Paraguay increased that total to 36 in eight matches.

However, the contest against Paraguay proved their toughest knockout test, with neither side able to establish a winning advantage during regulation time.

The penalty shootout ultimately decided the contest and ended Ghana’s hopes of lifting the Tier A trophy.

Ghana’s campaign in Azerbaijan will continue through the tournament’s ranking phase, giving the players additional opportunities to compete against international opposition.

The remaining fixtures will help determine the team’s final position and provide further competitive exposure against sides from different footballing backgrounds.

For the technical team, the matches also offer an opportunity to assess individual performances, identify areas requiring improvement and prepare the players for future international assignments.

The quarter-final defeat is a setback, but the experience of competing against seven different opponents before facing Paraguay has exposed the young squad to varied playing styles and the demands of knockout football.

The inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from October 24 to 30, 2026. The initiative brings together 189 FIFA member associations, with more than 3,000 players, coaches and officials participating.

Organised as part of FIFA’s Talent Development Scheme, the event aims to expand access to international competition for players aged 15 and under, particularly those who have limited opportunities to experience football beyond their domestic environments.

Matches follow an eight-a-side format, featuring two 20-minute halves and rolling substitutions. The format is intended to encourage greater player involvement and support technical development.

The festival also incorporates educational activities and opportunities for participants to interact across national boundaries. Rather than ending a team’s participation after elimination, its multi-tier structure provides continued competition and helps match teams against opponents at comparable performance levels.

The winner of Tier A will be crowned the inaugural champion of the competition’s top tier, while the other tiers offer their own competitive pathways.

The immediate objective for the Black Comets is to respond positively to the Paraguay defeat and use the remaining fixtures to strengthen the players’ international experience before the festival concludes.
