General Mkhwanazi in line for national Hawks head post

ACTING Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has initiated the process to appoint KZN police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as the national head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), commonly known as the Hawks.

SAPS Ministry spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi said the appointment process was being undertaken in accordance with Section 17CA(1)–(3) of the relevant Act, which stipulates that the national head of the DPCI is appointed by the minister of police with Cabinet’s concurrence.

“The acting minister has submitted a Cabinet Memorandum seeking Cabinet’s concurrence for the appointment of Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as national head of the DPCI. The memorandum will be presented at the earliest opportunity during a Cabinet sitting,” said Mogotsi.

The Act also provides for the appointment to be reported to Parliament.

The DPCI plays a critical role in the country’s fight against organised crime, corruption and other serious priority offences.

Mogotsi said appointing a national head was a priority under the Police Reset Agenda, adding that the position was essential to ensuring strong leadership, strategic direction and operational effectiveness in tackling serious crime.

“This is a priority for the Police Reset Agenda. The appointment of a national head is important in ensuring strong leadership, strategic direction and operational effectiveness in addressing these crimes,” she said.
