Galamsey fight Kennedy Agyapong warns NPP gurus involved in the act says he will mention names
James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North, has called for influential political figures to be held accountable if Ghana is to win the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on Net 2 Televisionβs morning programme, Quayson urged the government and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be transparent about their efforts to stop the practice. He argued that the anti-galamsey campaign would remain ineffective if people in positions of power were allowed to operate without consequences.
The MP claimed that certain illegal mining sites were linked to senior NPP members, a situation he said could undermine enforcement efforts.
He warned that he would name those allegedly involved if they continued their activities, stressing that he would not be intimidated into remaining silent, even if his position attracted criticism from within his party.
Quayson also accused some traditional authorities of permitting politicians and illegal miners to exploit land under their control.
He highlighted the environmental consequences of galamsey, particularly the pollution and destruction of rivers and other water sources that communities and animals depend on.
His remarks have renewed calls for stronger enforcement of mining laws, greater accountability and decisive action against individuals involved in illegal mining, irrespective of their political connections.
